Our high-speed rail network is absolutely pitiful compared to our near-neighbours in Europe. But it's only when you see it in situ that you realise how far behind the UK is, courtesy of decades of under-investment by successive Governments. 
It also brings into stark relief our incompetence at project managing large construction works. There's a lot of "not invented here" around HS2, as if we're trying something the world has never attempted before. But globally there's tens of thousands of miles of high-speed rail!
And finally, it shows at a glance the huge divide between London & the SE, and places further north. See how the (already pathetic-speed) yellow rail lines become grey as you travel further up England? Good to improve those rather than pouring £100 billion into HS2's black hole!
