It's a lovely bank holiday weekend and I haven't done a crowdsourced playlist for a while...

So what's your favourite song to listen to while lying in the sun?

THREAD - Something of a milestone in England's education system today with more than half of kids now in academies.

Seemed like an opportunity to reflect on the policy (as someone heavily involved in it...
First thing to say is it's happened incredibly quickly. I wrote a paper 11 years ago arguing that all schools should be allowed to become academies which I think was the time anyone made this suggestion publicly. And here we are

That's lightening fast for a change of this scale
One thing this tells us is that not many people were invested in fighting for the status quo. Especially as the vast majority of academies converted by choice.

Worth remembering when people argue we should revert to that.

About to watch the Brexit film. Worked with Dom on a daily basis for 4 years so this is going to be interesting....

(Had nothing to do with Leave though!)
The mannerisms are perfect but the accent isn't quite strong enough. And he looks too neat / sounds too articulate. Certainly getting across his total contempt for Tory MPs....
It's like a West Wing version of Dom.

The past few years I've done a blog on my favourite books of the year but no one has the attention span for blogs anymore.

So here's a thread on my top 10 favourite books of 2018, in case anyone wants inspiration for late present buying.
1. The Odyssey trans. @EmilyRCWilson

I devoured this last Christmas. Wilson is the first woman to translate The Odyssey and she certainly brings out new aspects of characters like Penelope and Circe.

But it's also just the best translation ever done. Check out the opening.
2. The Unwomanly Face of War by Svetlana Alexievich.

IMHO Alexievich is the greatest living writer in any form. Her style of telling stories through the words of others is mesmerizing and astonishingly powerful. This is her first book on the experience of Soviet women in WW2.

Okay folks I'm gonna do a thread on China demographics.

Basically, I see this weird line a lot that China is a super homogenous place: like it's a monolithic place that we need to be scared of because they are perfectly united against America.

That view is very wrong.
So I want to do a thread exploring just some basic data showing you a bit more about how diverse China is. And particularly, pointing out how much of China's apparent homogeneity is for a variety of reasons hard to pick up in official data.
The big question is ethnicity. China's dominant ethnicity is Han. Han is the ethnic group associated with Chinese. There are other ethnic groups that are properly or otherwise considered Chinese, but the Han ethnic group is the biggie.

This is either a bright idea or a brilliant mistake, but this is only, this is only, this is only the beginning...
I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."

So here's a break from the chaos and noise of the outside world, just for a little bit.

Today, despite the horrid weather, I headed up to Sharpenhoe Clappers, a @nationaltrust property near my home.
Sharpenhoe is a chalk escarpment and surrounding countryside, gifted to the nation after WW1 in honour of William Robertson's two younger brothers who died in the conflict.

It's an easy walk from the car park to the escarpment itself.
Sharpenhoe Clappers has over two thousand years of human interactions.

Here you can see that it makes an excellent defensive site. The Celts of the Iron Age thought so. They made it the site of one of their hillforts.

Lately, friends in different industries have voiced admiration at my choice to consult / build my businesses. “I could never do that,” I’ve heard. “The stress of running a company, always worrying about where the money come from…I’d never want to deal with all the uncertainty.”
And that’s great! It’s 100% fine to never start your own business. Millions of existing companies NEED your full-time talents to grow. So by all means, dive in and help them 🙌

But salaried friends: don’t ever, EVER assume that full-time work = stability. That is a garbage myth.
I am sick and tired of watching people I love get comfortable in a full-time role, and then…

> Get trapped in a terrible company culture, and remain stuck — because their resume /network aren’t strong enough to land them a job elsewhere
