#OTD in 1945: The Italian commune of Fornovo di Taro is liberated from German forces by Brazilian forces.
German general Otto Fretter-Pico surrendered to Brazilian forces and was kept under their custody until 1948 when he retired and went to live in Switzerland.

#OTD in 1851, Queen Victoria opened the Great Exhibition in The Crystal Palace. Famous people of the time attended, including Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens and Lewis Carroll.

Six million people—equivalent to a third of the entire population of Britain at the time—visited the Great Exhibition. The average daily attendance was 42,831 with a peak attendance of 109,915 on 7 October.
The event made a surplus of £186,000 (£18,370,000 in 2015), which was used to found the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum.

#OTD 1782 - The start of 3 days of chasing and fighting began in what was to become known as the Battle of the Saintes, off Dominica.

A French fleet under the Comte de Grasse met a British fleet under Admiral Sir George Rodney.

A fun(?) 3 day thread this time...
Brief background - Sept 1781 - De Grasse's victory over a British fleet off the Virginia Capes stops the navy from reinforcing Yorktown & results in the surrender of troops under Cornwallis the next month.

Mostly just sharing this as it's in my head

The Comte de Grasse returned to the Caribbean.

At the start of 1782 de Grasse's fleet began capturing British possessions...

Within 3 months the only islands remaining under British rule were Antigua & Barbados, St. Lucia and Jamaica, which de Grasse was ordered to 'conquer'...

I’m going to explore this little know attempt at “Liberty or Death” through the story of one man, John Baird. First a loyal soldier, then a deserter, a weaver, and finally a rebel. It’s going to be a long thread and spread over a couple of days, hold on to your hats.
Baird joined the 2nd battalion of the 95th Rifles in Glasgow in 1806. Promoted to bugler, he was sent with the battalion in the expeditionary force commanded by General Whitelocke to attack Napoleon's Spanish allies in Buenos Aires.

1) 1) Existe um submarino alemão afundado no litoral piauiense. O U-507 afundou vários navios brasileiros na costa nordestina e foi mandado ao fundo do mar por um Catalina americano. Essa é a foto real do ataque ao U-507, ele e sua tripulação jazem a 100 milhas de Luís Correia.
2) O Brasil quase entrou na guerra do lado nazista. Na época, Hitler e Getúlio Vargas tinham excelente relacionamento e uma grande parceria comercial. A judia Olga Prestes (a do filme) foi deportada pra Alemanha a pedido dos Nazistas, posteriormente executada.

#OTD, 100 years ago, the German High Seas Fleet surrendered to the Royal Navy. After they had last met at Jutland, 70 German warships met well over 100 allied warships and sailed into captivity. It was the largest gathering of warships in close company in history.
Only the previous day, Germany's U-boats had sailed into captivity in Harwich, per the terms of the armistice signed the previous week.
The first U-boats sailed into Harwich as the mist began to lift on the morning of the 20th. The boats were received in silence: no jeering or cheering from either side. Once the formalities were done, the German crews watched as the White Ensign was raised over their vessels.
