My attorney, for example, specializes in scholars and international trade. His predecessor, also a friend, only in international trade (which includes immigration)

Visas for refugees are a transition to a permanent visa: within one year, a refugee or asylum seeker must apply for permanent residency.

There may be improvements to make there, but as I see it, until we have full control over democracy again, it's better to protect the USCIS from ANY changes.

The USCIS knows it and has several provisions for different classes of individuals under duress.
