Saturdays are usually the most entertaining because my assistant is usually here, and some people will come in and talk directly to her and treat me like I'm not even standing there during the conversation. People of all skin tones/eco demographics do it.
The look of utter horror when my assistant says "This is the owner, and she does the fittings and she'll be happy to get you started."& I pick up where she left off- guiding them to the cash register to pay their fitting fee. I'm looked at as some enigma because I'm well spoken
And probably use words they've never even used themselves. I also think they are shocked that I'm not even pissed off or offended at their ignorance or treat them slightly. Coming into the boutique brings more education and personal insight than just a bra fitting for some.
In the back of their head, some are thinking "this black woman stepped up & got her grants and assistance and started this business and look at what that assistance has given her!" until I blow all of their misconceptions by making it a point to talk about how we are self-funded
&owe no one, and that every article of clothing, every bar of soap, every earring is owned outright. It blows their mind. I see it. People of all walks underestimate me simply because of the color of my skin&think I've set up shop on 'this side of town" because of my blackness.
Don't get it twisted. I'm on this side of town LEAST of all because of the black population- yes, it's a benefit because I can tell my story and encourage other wannabe entrepreneurs to go for it. But I'm on this side of town because the rent is affordable and I saw potential for
growth and improvement in the area when I moved in. It's also 10 minutes from my house. I also knew that in order for me to build a strong customer base in the surrounding area was to be the BEST at what I do and to offer the best service & products not carried elsewhere.
This is no cookie cutter establishment. I carry brands that are unheard of or carried in less than 1% of the boutiques in the country, but what sets me apart is my ability to fit someone and not make the process uncomfortable. Women HATE shopping for bras. Until they come here.
I fit by site. I challenged myself three years ago to ditch the tape measure, ask a few questions& then do what I was called to do. I don't take what I do lightly nor do I crack jokes about breasts. I've seen too many women cry about theirs & mutilate their bodies because of it.
If I can educate a woman, I'm empowering her. If I can educate a woman and her spouse, I'm empowering him to do right by his daughters should he find himself a single parent and have to take his girls for a fitting. There aren't enough good fitters- I was fit by one of the most
renowned people in the industry&SHE GOT IT WRONG. If there was a way that I could educate more people&send them out to do what I do on the level that I do it, I would. I'm waiting for God to continue to show me my purpose, what else He has for me,& how I can continue to give back
