deku's a half demon, which is already a problem in itself because he neither belongs with demons or humans, meaning neither side wants to accept it. what makes it WORSE, however, is that inko has apparently passed down her holy powers to him - making him the biggest abomination
it also winds up making him useless, because if he were to use either of his powers in excessive amounts, it would kill him. the only reason he has not been driven out of the village is due to the fact that his mother is a priestess
the adults make a point not to speak to him, but that doesn't prevent them from telling their children about the "monster". warning them against him, resulting, of course, in deku's isolation.
but kids are cruel, so of course it didn't end there. because when humans don't understand, they fear. and when they fear, it drives them into doing horrible things.
"don't kill the demon boy" was what their parents said. they never said they couldn't scare him to make sure that he never used his powers against them.

(nevermind that everyone knows that deku couldn't use any of it without harming himself)
(or perhaps that was the goal. to make deku use his powers and finish the job for them.)
(unfortunately for them, inko raised him far too well. deku was kind, and deku was more resilient than they ever anticipated.)
kacchan on the other hand is the demonic heir of the eastern lands. a powerful dragon demon from the illustrious and powerful house of bakugo. he was fierce, intelligent, and known for his frighteningly excellent control of his powers for someone barely nearing his 3rd century
what most people didn't know was that kacchan hated court politics. he found them boring and facetious. everyone was full of bullshit and he'd much rather spend his time training or travelling - and often without permission.
it became something of a game for him. vanishing and seeing how far he could go before his mother inevitably hunted him down.

(besides, he knew SHE didn't like any of the court drama any more than he did. she oughta thank him, really.)
he was on one of his many undisclosed adventuring when he comes across a strange scent. he's more than baffled when he comes across a ring of weak human children. his nose might not be as strong as the dog demons of the west or the wolf demons of the north, but he knows it's here
so he makes himself known. the puny humans startle, whirling towards him only to pause when they catch sight of him - of his slitted crimson eyes, of the pointed ears peeking from behind his hair, of the dangerous fangs peeking from his mouth, the claws on his hands.
they scream and run, yelling about demons before katsuki could even say anything. how pathetic. he moved to chase after them, still curious about the strange scent, when he almost trips over something on the floor.

it was another human. incredible. they forgot one of their own.
or wait, was it?

he's greeted by large, tear-filled eyes. if green eyes weren't jarring enough, the green hair sure as hell was. katsuki had travelled enough to know that most humans didn't come in that colour.
those very eyes widened at the sight of him, scrambling back in fright, but katsuki had questions and he wasn't gonna let this kid go without answers. "hold on a sec!" he barks, the strange human freezing. his chin trembled, but he otherwise stayed still, to katsuki's delight.
"what kinda human are you?" he demands, crouching down to get a closer look at him. the boy flinched, to katsuki's bemusement.

after a beat of silence, he huffs. "oi, do you have a tongue? i asked you a question!"
the boy finally opened his eyes to look at him again. he reeked of fear. unsurprising since that was the usual response humans had to him, but the baffling part was that he wasn't even screaming like most humans would be.

the human looked just as confused.
"h... how come you aren't eating me?" he murmurs.

katsuki looks at him like he's stupid. "you WANT me to eat you?"

"no!" the weird human yelps, shaking his head frantically. "please don't eat me!"

he was getting annoyed. "answer my question then!"
question...?

deku frantically tried to think. he knew the demon boy had said something, but he'd been busy freaking out to really pay attention.

the dragon boy sighs irritably. "i asked what kind of human you are! you LOOK human enough, but you don't smell or feel like it."
smell? feel? deku had no idea what he was talking about.

"i..." he hesitates, because as frightened as he was, this dragon boy had yet to treat him with animosity. sure, he was annoyed, but he hasn't made overt threats yet. probably due to his own curiosity of what deku is.
he doesn't know how long that would last when he tells him. but he has never met another demon child before. most of the demons that attack the village are barely strong enough to gain a humanoid form. that alone spoke volumes of this boy's strength. he was dangerous.
but he might end up getting eaten anyway if he continues not giving this boy any answers. he was looking more annoyed by the second.

"i..."

"what, don't you know?" the boy continues looking at him like he's stupid. he pauses then, looking thoughtful. "or are you just stupid?"
"i'm not stupid." deku protests. his mother always told him about how smart he was for his age.

"but you don't even know what you are!" the boy snorts derisively. "that's stupid to me."

"you're mean."
deku gasps, realising what he just said, slapping his hands over his mouth. oh no. now he's REALLY going to die. maybe he IS stupid.

but the blond boy looks amused. "yeah, so i've been told. what about it?"

wait... he's not angry?

"hah? why would i? it ain't wrong."
he squeaks. he didn't realise he said that outloud.

before anything else could be said, the boy was suddenly lifted by the scruff of his neck. the blond snarls, kicking at the air. "hey!"

the hand holding him belongs to an adult. same blonde hair, same fierce eyes, same scowl.
"there you are, you stupid brat!" the woman growls, baring her fangs. "what the hell are you doing this close to a human village? you are TRYING to get killed?"

"HAH? as if some puny humans are strong enough to kill me!" the boy sneers. "go away, you old hag! i was busy here!"
"busy with WHAT!?" she demands.

deku freezes as she levels her glare at him.

the demoness blinks, baffled. "who is this?"

"a stupid human." her son answers.
"that's not a human." she rolls her eyes.

"well then do YOU know what he is?" he challenges.

deku swallows at the cautious look she presents him, shrinking as small as he can.

"take a closer look at him, kid. that feel like a human to you?"
"well he ain't a DEMON either." katsuki huffs.

"he isn't." the old hag agreed. "he's both."

the boy flinches again. (he did that a lot)

katsuki stares, uncomprehending. "hah? how can you be BOTH?"

"we ain't having this discussion." his mother says flatly, dragging him away.
"why NOT?" the boy demands as the demoness walks away with him under her arm. "and put me DOWN, you ugly old lady!"

deku winces as she smacked him upside the head. "watch your damn mouth, you shitty brat! we ain't having this discussion and that's FINAL!"
"you haven't even reached your thirteenth century yet!" is the last thing he hears them say before draconic wings stretched out from the woman's back. deku covers his face as a strong gust of wind blew him back a bit. when he looks back up, the demons are gone.
"stay away from that village." mitsuki warns him as they make their way back to the palace.

the brat wrinkled his nose. "why?"

"because i said so! just LISTEN for me for once, will you!? didn't you feel the high level of purity around that area? do you WANT to turn into ashes?"
"they can't turn me to ash!" he declares like the arrogant brat he is.

"katsuki, i'm SERIOUS." she scowls. "purification is one of the only damn things capable of actually killing us. you get any part of you purified and it ain't coming back. stay away from that village."
"well how come that kid's there?" he pouts petulantly. "'cause he's half human?"

"because he's half human." mitsuki agrees wearily. "i'm still not explaining that to you."

"but it doesn't make sense! how is he half? that isn't normal!"

"it isn't."

"huh?"
"enough. we aren't talking about this anymore."

she was ready to argue with him more on the subject, but to her relief, the brat quieted.

she should have realised that was a warning itself.
meanwhile, back with deku, the village children ran to their parents screaming about demons. inko was sent to investigate, only to see her son on the forest floor, battered and bruised. to say she was furious was putting it lightly.
a council was held with the village head about the treatment of her son. they AGREED that deku was to stay safe if they wished to remain under her protection. they tried insisting that perhaps the children had only been playing games, but no one could refute the evidence there.
while deku's injuries healed quickly due to his demonic heritage, the tattered, bloodied remains of his clothes were pretty damning evidence of what had happened. from then on, the humans became more strict with their kids about avoiding the half demon all together.
because while they hated and feared deku, they feared what would happen even more without inko's protection.

so deku was left alone for good, this time.

which gave katsuki the perfect opportunity to single him out.
his mother had prevented him from asking any of the other adults or kids at court. while he could have just asked them anyway, he knew she would've ended up finding out one way or another.
so he decided to go to the direct source instead. sure, the half-demon was probably stupid, but katsuki could be smart for the both of them. he'd be able to figure out what he was.
it was easier than he thought it would be, really. the other humans avoided the half-demon like a plague, and he was by himself often.

he was figuring out how to draw him to the forest where they met when the kid makes it easy for him by going there himself without prompting
before he could even reveal himself, the boy surprises him by calling out. "um, you're there, aren't you? the boy from the other day."

katsuki drops down from the tree branch. the boy whirls around, looking nervous. curiously enough, he seems to relax at the sight of him.
"how'd you know it was me?"

"i... didn't, really." the boy admits. "i just felt like someone was watching me. but it didn't feel angry? i know what that's like. and i still felt you looking even when no one was around, so i just..."

"guessed." katsuki finishes. "that's stupid."
"quit calling me stupid." the boy mumbles, petulant.

"but it is stupid." katsuki says flatly, crossing his arms. "you felt that someone was watching you and you decided to lure them out, alone, without knowing who it actually is. what were you gonna do if it wasn't me, huh?"
the boy hesitated.

"exactly." katsuki says smugly. "stupid."

"what did you want?" the half-demon sulks, pouting. "why did you come back? your mother didn't seem happy that you were here."
katsuki frowns at the reminder, glancing around cautiously. "yeah well, i don't care what she thinks. you still didn't answer my question last time!"

the kid looks confused. "but... didn't your mother already say..?"

"so you DO know what you are!"
"y... yes?"

"tell me then!"

"but your mo - "

"i don't CARE if she said it! i want YOU to say it!"

katsuki tilts his head. "unless... you WANT me to think you're stupid?"

"i'm not stupid!" the boy protests.

"then spit it out!"

"i'm a half-demon!"
"how's that even work?" katsuki leans in, looking at him closely.

the half-demon squirms at his proximity. "my mother's a human and my dad's a demon." he mutters.

"that's weird." katsuki tells him bluntly.

the boy flinches.

"what? it is! how was that even possible?"
"love." the boy says softly. "mom says anything's possible with love."

katsuki wrinkles his nose. "that sounds lame."

"no it's not!" he protests. "i'm here, aren't i?"

that made him pause. "i guess you are." well that answered that, he supposes. "so what kinda demon are you?"
"huh?"

katsuki rolls his eyes. "you really are stupid."

"you're mean," the boy frowns. "just because i don't know what you mean doesn't make me stupid."

"whatever, dummy."

"can you just explain your question?"
"ugh, i can't believe i have to say something so obvious. well you know what kinda demon I am, don't you?"

"a... demon?"

"a DRAGON demon!" katsuki puffs his chest out.

"how come you don't have wings like your mom does?" the boy blurts out.
katsuki deflates a bit, glaring. "...none of your business!" he wasn't about to admit to this guy that he still couldn't shift bits of his form without doing a complete shift.

the boy flinched again, which was starting to get annoying. "stop that." katsuki demands.
"stop... what?" he says nervously.

"that! i didn't even touch you and you're already acting like i stepped on your foot!"

"s-sorry!"

"just answer my question already!" katsuki barks. "what kinda demon are you?"

"i don't know!" the boy admits, eyes beginning to mist up.
katsuki was baffled. "what the hell are ya crying for!?"

"stop yelling at me!" he sniffles, wiping at his eyes.

"auuuuughhhh, you're such a baby!"

"well you're mean!"
"you're lame!" katsuki groans, stomping over. he's annoyed when the boy steps back at his approach, grabbing his stupid fat face and rubbing at his even more stupid tears. "quit crying already!"
whatever it was he did seemed to shock the boy enough to stop, staring at him with wide green eyes as katsuki dries his face.

"what?" he demands.

"n-nothing!" the boy squeaks, flushing pink.

"your name fits you." katsuki rolls his eyes. "deku."
the dumb boy flinched yet again. "th-that's not my name."

"yes it is." he folds his arms. "i heard the other humans call you that."

"my name's izuku," deku protests.

katsuki stares at him strangely, suddenly crouching down and writing something on the floor.
"you can write?" deku whispers, looking at kanji written in amazement.

"you can't?" he scoffs, then points a clawed finger at the word he wrote. "this says 'deku'. you can also read it as 'izuku'."

the half-demon boy crouches down beside him, looking at him hopefully.

"what?"
"could you teach me how to write?"

"hah?" katsuki furrows his brows. "why would i? go ask your old hag!"

"she's not an old hag." deku frowns. "and... i would but mom is always busy."

"not my problem."

"please?" deku puts his hands together. "you made it look so cool!"
well, katsuki wouldn't refute that.

he puffs his chest out, preening. "well, DUH. of course i did!"

those eyes continued to stare at him.

"ugh, FINE. but JUST because i got nothing else to do, got that?"
deku bobbed his head so hard that katsuki's almost surprised it didn't fall right off. "yes! of course!"

katsuki writes down his own name. "this says bakugo katsuki. that's my name."
the other boy looks at the strokes intently, trying to copy it with his own finger. "bakugo kat... katchuki?"

katsuki looks at him oddly. "no. it's kat-SU-ki. there's no 'ch' in that!"

he looks flustered. "k-katschuki?"

"no! it's TSU! not chu!"

"katschuki!"
"you're such a deku!"

"mean!"

"how am I mean? it's your name!"

"no it's not," deku protests. "at least i'm saying your name!"

"oh yeah? say it then!"

"kacchuki!"

"that's not my name, shitty deku!"
"well what do i call you then?" deku huffs. "bakugo?"

katsuki wrinkles his nose. it was a slim chance, but he didn't want this somehow going back to his mother. bakugo was a prominent name, and katsuki's was even moreso.

"call me kacchan."
deku tests it out, the name rolling off of his tongue much easier. "kacchan?"

this way, even if deku starts talking about a 'kacchan', there's NO way the old hag would figure out it's him!

"at least you could say that." he snorts.
"is it also written like that?" deku points at the kanji for 'katsuki'.

katsuki shakes his head, writing the name right beside it. "no. like this."

the half-demon nods, reaching for one of the twigs and clumsily beginning to sketch his own lines in the dirt. "like that?"
"your handwriting is a joke." he tells him, squinting at the poor excuse of a name.

"kacchan's a jerk."

"and you suck." katsuki snorts, getting up.

deku looks up, looking surprised and something else katsuki wasn't sure. disappointment? "oh... are you going?"
"yeah," he huffs, flicking the dirt off his claws. "gotta before the old lady hunts me down. i'll be back same time tomorrow, so you better get that kanji right by then!"

the half-demon perks up, eyes bright with an equally bright grin. "i will, kacchan! i'll see you tomorrow!"
he smirks, fangs flashing, before disappearing in a blur.

deku smiles down at the letters etched on the floor, feeling lighter than he has for a long time as he practiced his strokes until they resembled the original.

he didn't want to disappoint his new friend.
in the end, mitsuki still finds out about deku.

but rather than locking katsuki up or killing deku, she continues to let him see the half-demon, even though she obviously disapproved.
(because mitsuki knows her son. knows that nothing would have stopped him if he put his mind to it. so instead, she keeps a close eye on him. ensures that he doesn't go over his head and get his ass purified for being so careless)
so katsuki continued to see the half-demon boy, teaching him how to read and write while they both tried to figure out exactly *what* deku was. for his part, deku did try to ask his mother about his demonic parentage, but she remained oddly tight-lipped about the subject.
so he doesn't push.

it was fine, katsuki had said. because they can figure it out together anyway. they tested what they could of deku's abilities, pushing his limits until his holy powers began to flare.
they shared stories. katsuki, of his life in the court. about the stupid dramas adults got themselves into. he also spoke of his duties as a future lord, declaring that he was going to achieve complete conquest, to be the strongest there ever was.
deku meanwhile told him about life in the village. answering his questions about humans, shyly sharing his own dreams of becoming strong enough to protect the ones he loved.
the seasons passed in a blink of an eye for katsuki. time was a different subject for demons. while human lives could pass within 50 years, demons would remain as young as a human infant. deku was in between that - aging faster than a demon, but much slower than a human.
it wasn't something he thought of much, as human lives weren't of relevance to him for most part. but the same couldn't be said for deku.
"what's wrong with you?" katsuki demands. deku was more distracted than usual.

to his alarm, his friend bursts into tears. "it's my mom." he sobs.

"what about her?"

"she's dying."
"she's sick." he hiccups, hugging himself. "the new priestess doesn't know how to heal her either. they... they say it's only a matter of time before..."

he couldn't finish, dissolving into despair. bleary eyes looked up at katsuki, pleading. "kacchan, i don't know what to do."
but what could katsuki do?

he knew that the passing of deku's mother may as well be a death sentence for her son. deku, who was well beyond 20 years remained as youthful as a 5 year old human. and they would drive him out of the village to die.
the priestess who would replace her did not trust her son any more than the rest of the villagers did, stubborn in their belief that his demonic heritage would lash out on them and destroy them all, nevermind that deku was the kindest and most gentle boy in that whole village.
katsuki had no answer for him that day. but he agrees to meet deku's mother.

despite his own mother's warnings about holy beings, deku's mother was similar to her son. nervous, but ultimately kind. despite being a powerful priestess, she harboured no ill will of demons.
at the sight of his surprise, she remarks that humans were just as capable of horrible actions.

she would know. she served the village for years, protecting it and its people. yet they would still drive her son out the second she had worn out her use.
humans could be just as cruel. just as selfish. they served themselves before they served anyone else.
katsuki could sense the decay that was eating at her, and knew that it was only a matter of time before it ran its course. inko knew it too, from the resigned look in her eyes. deku had long passed out in her arms, tears streaking his face as she strokes a hand through his hair.
she tells him that she had tried to get in contact with deku's father, to no avail. that they had no other family who would take her son in.

they both knew deku would not survive on his own.

"he can stay with me."

the relief in her eyes was painful. "thank you."
inko dies that night.

katsuki steals him away before everything was engulfed in flames.
"mom told me she used to live on a cliff before," deku told him two summers before. "right by the ocean."

he helps deku dig a grave, lowering inko into the soil, and standing by as deku prayed for his own mother's burial.
deku was never the same since then. a bit of his innocence had been taken. it had taken katsuki months before he was able to bring back a bit of spark back in his eyes, caring clumsily for his friend despite still being a child by demon's standards.
he'd taught him how to hunt, how to provide for himself. but neither of them knew how to build a hut, to provide adequate shelter for the tougher months.

lesser demons were also on the prowl, constantly looking for their next meal.
so when deku had fallen sick, katsuki had only one solution.

he takes him to the capitol.
shuzenji chiyo did not know what to make of the half-demon that her young lord had put under her care, but her duties as a healer took priority.

it didn't take long for the news to reach bakugo mitsuki.
"he can't stay here." mitsuki says firmly. "not unless you want to fight the whole court."

"so be it!" katsuki snarls, fangs bared in challenge. "i'll destroy every last one of them."
"these are your people, katsuki." masaru reminds, heart aching for the frustrated tears building in his son's eyes. "will you choose this boy over them?"

"i promised to protect him!"

"you also promised to protect them."
silence. there was a pensive look on his face, weighing his options.

the young lord raised his chin, meeting their eyes defiantly. "both are mine. so i will protect both."

mitsuki shared a look with her mate.

with a sigh, she pinches the bridge of her nose. "so be it."
they allow deku to stay, but with some ground rules.

he was not allowed to go around on his own, and any misstep on his part would be katsuki's responsibility.

basically, he was a pet.
on top of all of this, katsuki had to taken his lordship more seriously. he was no longer allowed to go on unpermitted field trips on his own, and was expected to do his lessons inside the capitol.
it was mindnumbing, frustrating, but it was a sacrifice he decided to honour in exchange for deku's safety.

for his part, deku was fascinated by how similar the demon village operated to a human one.
the main difference were its people.they were just as cautious as the humans had been, yet also endured him better than they had due to his less-than human attributes. his green colouring had stood out in his old village, but here? it made him plain.
kacchan remained to be the sole friend he had his age, but deku got along well with the old demoness that cared for him when he was sick. he even managed to impress upon kacchan's personal tutor, a stern cat demon called aizawa.
it was aizawa who decided to include deku in katsuki's studies, seeing as having an academic rival did better for katsuki's attention span. the half-demon soaked up information like a sponge and it pushed katsuki into working harder.
it was a nice arrangement. everyone could see that katsuki was improving leaps and bounds now that he was taking his responsibilities seriously, and even some of the less tolerant ones were willing to deal with deku for the next few centuries.
after all, he was only half demon. while he aged slower than a human, he still aged faster than a demon.

but the peace didn't last when it was revealed that deku possessed powers of purification.
a rivalling house had sent an assassin to get rid of katsuki.

deku had been with him when they were attacked.

instinct took over at the realisation that his dearest friend was in danger, and the demon turned to ash.

the surge of purity sent the capitol into panic.
mitsuki stormed to their location with protective fury, and came across a strange scene.

the only people within the room were her son and his half-breed.

crumpled at the floor was a pile of clothing and a poisoned dagger, covered in ashes.
a meeting was held to discuss what was to be done.

they all knew who sent the assassin, but they possessed no proof when the assassin was purified. there was nothing left that could be traced back to the belongings that remained of them - no scent, no energy, nothing.
which brought up the other concern, the most glaring concern, some would say.

there was a holy being in their midst.

they wanted him killed. no one felt safe with a holy creature so closeby. regardless that the only reason it was revealed was to protect one of their own.
miles away from the capitol, katsuki had stolen deku away.

aizawa and chiyo had informed him of what would happen. the meeting was merely for propriety's sake. one way or another, the demons would have demanded deku's death to ensure their own safety.
back at the capitol, mitsuki wanted to scream when she realised what her stupid son had done.

that dumb brat. as if she would have allowed them to kill the boy when she knew just how much he cared for him. his reckless actions had only made this more complicated.
but, at least, it also opened up another option.

as mitsuki sent out the order to help bring her son back, she also sent a request to a very old friend.
for his part, deku knew exactly what kacchan was sacrificing by helping him escape.

they had stopped at a nearby cave. both of them were in need of rest - kacchan had been flying nonstop the second they were past the border, and deku was still worn out from the purification
it nagged at him, the knowledge that kacchan was sacrificing his future. his dreams.

just because deku was an abomination of the world that didn't belong anywhere.

nobody deserved that. least of all kacchan.
was it worth it? dragging kacchan down like this?

neither humans nor demons wanted him around. and the only people that ever loved him were suffering just from association. he knew that his mother had worried herself sick over him. knows that the same is happening to kacchan now
"kacchan?"

"give me a few more minutes and i should be good to go for another few hours." kacchan grunts, starfished beside him on the floor.

deku cups his cheek. "kacchan."

crimson eyes fluttered open. a worn thumb sweeps beneath the dark shadow beneath his eye, heart aching.
"you should go back."

kacchan stares. "excuse me?"

deku swallows, feeling heat collecting in his eyes. no no no. please. let him get through this without crying. "i said you should go back."
kacchan looks at him in disbelief. "you've lost it."

"kacchan--"

"have you forgotten that they're hunting you down?" he demands. "i get that you've never had a hint of self preservation in you from the start, but they want to fucking KILL you, deku!"
"but they're not." deku shakes his head. "they don't care about me, kacchan. it's you they want. you're the heir to the eastern lands. i'm just a stain they want to wipe off the planet."
his childhood friend was above him in a snap, hands curled in his kosode, snarling at his face. "so you want them to kill you!?"

"of course not!" frustrated tears rolled down his face. "i don't want to die! but i don't want you wasting your future on me either!"
"don't tell me what to do!"

"but it's true!" he grabs the clawed hands gripping him. they were trembling. "kacchan, we both know i'm just dragging you down!"

"then don't drag me down!" the blond shouts. "get stronger so that no one can ever harm you! quit giving up on me!"
tears dripped on his face.

oh.

izuku reaches up, framing kacchan's wet face.

"you don't get to give up on me!" his voice breaks, breaking izuku's heart along with it.
"we're supposed to be in this together! i'm gonna be the most powerful demon lord in all of japan and you're gonna be my general!"

"kacchan," he says softly. "to do that, you have to go back."
katsuki knows he's right.

he knows they won't stop until they find him. knows that being with deku was just as likely to get him killed as leaving him alone, knows that deku isn't helpless, that even if his purification still hurts him, aizawa ensured that he wasn't defenseless.
he's been with deku for so long that he doesn't know how to be without him.

he doesn't know if he could.

but he does know that leaving him was the best thing he could do for deku right now.
"fine," he chokes out, eyes squeezing shut in vain effort to keep the damn things from leaking out. "i'll go. but only if you promise not to get your ass killed."

"kacchan--"

"promise me."

"...okay. i promise."
he feels deku sit up, wrapping his arms tightly around him. katsuki tucks his face at the crook of a freckled neck, arms winding around his waist and holding on tight.

"get stronger." he says fiercely. "and stay alive."

deku sniffles against his shoulder. "i will."
he doesn't know how long they remained like that, but it's deku that pulls away. he gives katsuki this heartbreaking smile, swiping his fingers over the wet trails on katsuki's face.
reaches up to grasp his wrist, turning his face in deku's hand. presses his mouth against his pulse. a promise.

when he leaves, neither of them say goodbye.
