Note to self: take it nice and slow when looking at artbooks.

The first time I used Tumblr, there were so many beautiful interesting images on every page that I wanted to throw up. But by the next day I was just BURNING through content and never looked back.

Time to slow down.
I was just leafing through Monster Hunter Illustrations 2 (WONDERFUL BOOK) when I realized I was blowing through it as if I was trying to speed run the entire book in one sitting. Of course there's a basic primal pleasure in looking at cool images, but I wasn't learning anything.
Things really open up when you slow down to smell the roses. Like, look at how this insect reads as an ant while having hind legs that distinctly recall the frog legged leaf beetle (sagra buqueti)
#MonsterHunter
Look how this concept uses the bulldog ant as a starting point, but makes the jaws feel even stronger by referencing stag beetle mandibles! Look at how they cross when they close!
#MonsterHunter #ConceptArt
Look at how it actually has mantis eyes, NOT ant eyes!
How does it have such a weird mix of mostly non ant parts (it even has 3 extra eyes like a mantis!) and yet still feel like an ant? Because of the antenna! Their shape and lower placement relative to the eyes make them very antlike!
I love how in these concepts the mandibles have evolved to be able to strike and clasp like ... a praying mantis? Nope! Actually they're more like the front legs of the giant water bug! Capcom at their peak is always several steps ahead of where others would stop!
This one however has hind legs thatdo recall a praying mantis! Combined with false eyes on it's abdomen to scare off predators! What a cool idea! And such beautiful execution!
Gotta love this series of sketches that detail how its abdomen expands as it fills up with food! So many amazing details for such a minor denizen of the Monster Hunter world!
All these amazing, inspiring, educational cocepts from just a single page that I'd normally parse for just a few seconds. But my god, there's so much to take in when you slow down and REALLY pay attention!

Take it slow when you can afford to! You'll learn so much more!✌️
