Last night, the @CommerceGov said it would add a citizenship question to the #2020Census. In theory, it’s about getting an accurate count for purposes of the Voting Rights Act. In reality, it’s a racist xenophobic move with severe long-term consequences. commerce.gov/sites/commerce…
The census is an incredibly important tool that touches so many aspects of American lives. It’s the foundational data for everything from voting rights for black people, median earnings for women versus men, fertility rates, and more.

How much truth is in trafficking rhetoric? Supposedly the victims are millions of kids. But policing reveals only 545 "solved" cases in 2017. Note this data isn't on sex trafficking, this is ALL trafficking found for 2017

There's issues on how police define & measure things. A case is"cleared"/solved if someone is arrested, charged with something, it's turned over to the courts, if you refuse to cooperate, or they "justifiably" kill you. Note that even kids are being charged with human trafficking
Human trafficking rhetoric is very closely tied to neoliberalism - the idea that capitalism/free markets can do no wrong. They don't really care about labor trafficking/ exploitation at all. Of the 545 total "cleared" cases in 2017, 467 were in the sex industry.

In another few hours, Day 6 of jury deliberations in the trial of El Chapo will begin in Brooklyn.
This is informed speculation--disclaimer--but today could be a pivotal day.
Here's what I mean.
So far jury notes have largely been requests for testimony & other evidence. As long as jurors are focused on the evidence it's not a good look for Chapo. The evidence was as overwhelming as it comes. To scrutinize it, however closely, suggests jurors are leaning toward verdict.
Chapo's lawyers don't really want a verdict because, in the world of the evidence, there's really only one verdict that 12 jurors can return unanimously: guilty.
Playing the odds, their best shot at a positive outcome is dissension leading to a hung jury and mistrial.
