lots of people asking what i think about astrological things after ive been discussing how certain elements of the occult and esoterica are bad for a while now. taking a break from working so will explain what i think at this moment briefly if anyone is interested
if you bother scoping this read the whole thing lest you get the wrong idea. on the one hand, i do think that the zodiac is "real". its literally real in the sense that those constellations actually exist and the ecliptic is a real thing. [...]
i also think the metaphysical and spiritual aspects of the zodiac have some reality. in the course of studying i went into the astrology thing the maximum level of skeptical yet eventually began to realize that there was some reality to it after researching past a certain point
basically, once i learned how the signs integrate + learned about their symbolic framework and what they actually represent and how they fit together in various ways, i was able to see that people fit their signs in some ways beyond simple confirmation bias or random chance [...]
in fact, if you look into it long enough, you can start to guess peoples signs with success far beyond the odds purely random chance would give you (1/12). this is a cool party trick people really enjoy, especially if you get four or five correct in a row. (girls go nuts) [...]
there are also certain signs that are easier to guess than others (the ones near the start of the wheel, basically). like i said i was the maximum level of skeptical about this but eventually had to concede something was "up". okay now for the biggest caveat of all time:
that does NOT mean that there is any validity to "pop" astrology, day to day horoscopes, and things like that. i have no idea what the mechanism is for why extremely basic natal astrology (thats what thats called, what i just described) has some reality. [...]
a full on pagan astrologer would say the heavenly bodies are literally beaming down influence upon us and that the section of the sky ruled by each zodiac sign "colors" this energy and thus affects us. is that real? skeptical. there are other explanations. [...]
it could literally just be seasons affecting people. it could also just be that god made this huge infinitely complex universe and people happen to notice this sync up between two things, like we are in a giant clock and certain patterns repeat themselves over and over. [...]
correctly observing the way these patterns unfold doesnt mean that someone actually understands whats going on "behind the scenes" if that makes any sense. who knows what the mechanism at play is, its impossible to say.
i wouldnt want to lead anyone astray on anything so i will say my theology is totally amateur and you shouldnt look to me for any theological guidance at all. i do think its significant that a star leads certain people as a sign in the bible [...]
out of all the signs god could have picked it was a star. just interesting, doesnt validate anything but is just an interesting note. imo the problem with astrology is that some aspects of it do have a reality that people can eventually see for themselves [...]
this is then used to confirm various toxic worldviews. my opinion is essentially that basic astrology isnt bad but its almost always roped into bad things. it almost always comes as a package with things that range from stupid, to bad, to nefarious, to outright demonic. [...]
imo its unwise to just shove the whole thing into the shadows because then some kids pick up on the fact that "something" is going on in there and then use that as a sign that they should go into a labyrinth of what is basically full on or watered down "black magic" systems.
in reality, god made the universe, and imo he probably made the zodiac as well but, that doesnt mean its something people should turn to for guidance day to day or that its something that people should essentially worship and fetishize. just my take.
in the catechisms ive seen it forbids "horoscopes". horoscope is an extremely particular word that entails "telling the future". i dont think its possible to tell the future using the zodiac. is this legit or just me being an idiot splitting hairs? thats up to you.
just feel like i should also put that out there, that people way more theologically schooled that me have kind of ruled that astrology is bad, but i always see it in the context of telling the future and thinking it gives you hard and fast information. again just my take
so basically to sum it up i think the zodiac has some ontological reality, probably just because god made it, and that its not inherently bad but its essentially always roped into things that are absolutely bad. just my opinion dont take my word for it obviously.
theres a story i heard where someone (a saint?) is talking to some people who think the full moon has some toxic influence on people, and he says well actually the devil just intentionally does things when theres a full moon, so that people will think the full moon is bad [...]
and that he does this to pervert gods creation and make people think a beautiful aspect of his creation is bad, when in reality all things he made are good. maybe forces like that are at play sometimes. thoughts for the mind i guess
