When you grow up black, you end up having a bunch of friends on the inside. The feeling when you get a call from the jail but you know you don’t have ten minutes to talk and you have to deny it is so heartbreaking.
But if you pick up they basically pay for the whole ten minutes so you have to talk the whole time. And small talk is awkward but you know it’s such a highlight for their day. And you feel so guilty to talk about your own life but they like to hear.
It’s just I know there’s a lot of people who don’t even have the number for inmates saved in their phone. They don’t know what it’s like when those calls stack up. The way we criminalize blackness is disgusting.
And most of these people are in jail for drugs, while my white friends are getting rich from legal weed. Or guns while my white peers post theirs and look patriotic. Just fucking hurts.
When you see the call coming but you’re driving or at work and so you can’t pick up and you picture them excited to call, ready to spend money to talk, not having the opportunity to call until now. The boredom they experience. Sad.
