@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis I was a proud INR analyst for nine years. I often appears before Congress to testify in closed session. Never was my analysis subjected to political review. INR is NOT a policy shop. It is an analytic arm. It is absurd that @WhiteHouse or @WHNSC would have any role screening it.
@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis @WhiteHouse @WHNSC @whitehouse and Trump can have any policy position they want on climate change. They can even bury their heads in the sand and claim it is all a “Chinese hoax.” But they should not be allowed to supppress expert analysis, or skew it to fit their policy objectives.
@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis @WhiteHouse @WHNSC Schoonover shpuld have been allowed to submit his expert testimony on he dangers posed to our national security by climate change. INR was one of the only places that warned Bush about the dangers of invading Iraq. INR was first intel agency to see truth/folly of Vietnam War.
@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis @WhiteHouse @WHNSC Pound for pound (it is tiny) INR is simply the finest analytic unit in USG, and it pains me to see its expertise squandered, dissipated, suppressed. INR is famous for speaking truth to power. Jim Baker loved it. So did Schultz. So did Albright. A shame to see this fiasco
@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis @WhiteHouse @WHNSC My bosses at INR (I served under both Democratic and Republican Presidents) would NEVER have allowed the White House to edit my testimony before Congress.

In fact, I was once summoned to White House to explain analysis inconsistent with high level official statements.
@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis @WhiteHouse @WHNSC My bosses at INR had my back. Their message to me? This: “They’re entitled to make policy statements...even if their policy does not track the facts...but they (White House) are not entitled to rewrite the truth of your analysis. Stick to your guns!” I did, and prevailed.
@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis @WhiteHouse @WHNSC Analysis is NOT policy. White House “Policy” on climate change can be absurd - e.g. Happer’s position. Stupidity is not illegal or a violation of the Constitution. But analysts have obligation to the truth - even if that truth (with credit to Al Gore) is “inconvenient.”
@jdawsey1 @eilperin @brady_dennis @WhiteHouse @WHNSC Apologies for typos.....large fingers, small phone keyboard....
