In 2017, Jo was honoured in the @HouseofCommons with a coat of arms. Inspired by her maiden speech, it includes the motto “more in common” and four red roses to represent her family, two red for @UKLabour, and two white for Yorkshire.

(1) James Shaw, co-leader of NZ's far left Green Party was attacked today by a man now in Police custody. Shaw is reportedly uninjured.

I detest political violence of ANY kind. I hope this incident is not used to portray his peaceful opponents negatively.

(2) Media coverage of this thankfully minor assault reminds me of the assassination of British Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016.

She was killed by a man who was having some kind of mental illness episode and who also opposed her pro-EU anti-Brexit views. It was just before the vote.
(3) When a politician is assaulted or murdered, today's already insane media environment goes completely off the deep end.

It does not matter who the person is or what they believe. Violence is wrong, and it is bad for the country.

And, lying about it is bad for the country.

Following on from yesterday's THREAD about the huge anti-Tory bloc I think Britain desperately needs for real, lasting change, here's a note about #FBPE. Or 'centrist Dads'. Or people who voted Labour under Blair but wouldn't vote Labour now. TLDR: it's complicated.
In 2017, against all odds, a left wing Labour Party managed to unite more or less the entire left. White working class Leavers, metropolitan Remainers, ethnic minorities, the young, professionals and graduates, suburban soft Tories and liberals. A remarkable achievement.
It did this because Labour's manifesto was a revelation, Corbyn's campaign was astonishing, Tory smears backfired massively, May lurched every day from disaster to apocalypse, and above all, because of HOPE. Labour's campaign was full of hope: inclusive, optimistic, vibrant.

Today we remember the 20 children and 6 educators who were killed by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary six years ago. My heart is with every family who has spent the last six years grappling with the heartbreak of losing a loved one. And all the while, Congress has failed to act.
We’ve seen the nightmare of gun violence repeat itself in schools, movie theaters, churches, nightclubs, concerts – and every single day in cities across our country. Despite these tragedies, we’re still seeing the same thing from Congress: complete inaction. Enough is enough.
On this painful anniversary, I encourage you to fight for reform. Call your members of Congress at 202-224-3121 to demand they take action to prevent future tragedies from claiming more lives. Speak out against the NRA, and say shame on any lawmaker who won’t stand up to it.

Statistics on #FarmMurders and #FarmAttacks were released by the South African government for the first time since 2011, confirming an average of 510 attacks and 56 murders per year, that is more than one per week.
Farmers are being slaughtered in the most horrific, inhumane, sadistic, barbaric ways. They are tortured until they die, women raped for hours on end while their husband's are forced to watch, their heads are crushed and they are set alight.
