We're entering the final weeks of the US Supreme Court term, which means every Monday is a nail-biter. The court just issued the latest orders (opinions come at 10am): supremecourt.gov/orders/courtor… No announcement yet about whether they'll take up the Trump admin's decision to end DACA
The justices sent back a case to the lower court involving whether Oregon can compel a baker to make a custom wedding cake for a same-sex couple for "further consideration" in light of last year's ruling in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case (see: buzzfeednews.com/amphtml/chrisg…)
No SCOTUS opinions today in the census citizenship Q or partisan gerrymandering cases. The court did dismiss an appeal challenging an order that Va. redraw redistricting maps because of unconstitutional racial gerrymandering – majority found no standing supremecourt.gov/opinions/18pdf…

Here's where things stand in the Obamacare case:
- A district judge in Texas ruled in December that the individual mandate was unconstitutional and couldn't be severed from the law, so the whole thing had to go buzzfeednews.com/article/paulmc…
- DOJ originally argued that the individual mandate + pre-existing conditions provisions had to rise or fall together, but could be severed from the rest of the law. Later, they changed course, joining Texas and Repub AGs in arguing the whole thing had to go

In today's (terrible) 5–4 death penalty decision, Gorsuch and Sotomayor continue the fight over Domineque Ray, whom SCOTUS allowed to be executed without his imam present. supremecourt.gov/opinions/18pdf…
Breyer, too, used his dissent to take another thwack at the majority's refusal to protect Ray's access to an imam in the death chamber.

One gets the sense that the liberal justices know they hold the winning hand here, at least in the court of public opinion.
