1/ As a black man in the US, I’ve seen how the criminal justice system is stacked against me and my brothers and sisters in the community. I grew up during mass incarceration in the 1990s and 2000s and have seen how it impacted a generation.
2/ An African American is five times more likely to be incarcerated than a white person, and from 2000 to 2016, the private prison population grew five times as quickly as the overall prison population.
3/ Politicians have allowed this to happen. Private prison companies have spent millions on lobbyists and campaign contributions to buy influence and rewrite criminal justice and immigration policies to prioritize their profits over public safety and equal protection under law.
4/ Private prisons and detention centers are often less safe than other facilities, they violate federal rules on confinement and impose forced labor on detainees. Health care and mental health services are often severely lacking.
5/ On top of all that, these companies boost profits by charging detainees huge fees for basic services — sticking them with debts that follow them even after their sentences -- and impose more outrageous fees for monitoring and supervision services.

6/ To begin correcting the wrongs of mass incarceration, we must get private interest out of our criminal Justice System. @ewarren’s plan will:
7/ ✅Ban private prisons and detention facilities.
8/ ✅Stop contractors from charging service fees for essential services.
9/ ✅Hold contractors accountable by expanding oversight, transparency and enforcement.
