I won't lie, I've had Suicidal Thoughts during the early days of the adpocalypse. It's hard to not wrap so much of your value and self-worth into this game. The rewards are great, but the consequences can be very high.
A lot of people don't ever express their true feelings on lot of issues because they don't want to be seen as weak, or that they're faking it for attention. Oftentimes any kind of reference to mental health is seen as a ploy to get attention
There are YouTubers I know who have millions of Subs who do this almost everyday on Twitter to the point of where it gets called out by other YouTubers because it feels shallow and attention-seeking
Etica suffered and no one knew about it till the end. And by then it was too late.
Sadly, the culture of YouTube in the past couple years has moved away from talking about these issues in a positive way. In fighting, dunking, monetizations of breakdowns, it seems like that rules the roost, and frankly none of us say anything against it publicly
YouTubers know the problems and struggles other YouTubers face, because we talked about it privately. But we don't really lift a finger to help change the system for the better. YouTube as a platform really can't do anything to help with people's mental state outside of one thing
And that would be communication with creators over the changes the platform makes. Most of the time that's where the anguish comes from. We don't know what's changing underneath us. It feels that we built our business on quicksand and what work yesterday won't work tomorrow
YouTube is absolutely fucking terrible at communicating anything and he quick and timely manner, unless it gets national attention and advertisers start to bail. We know this, they know this. But what are we to do?
We're all basically rats in a maze at this point, and as time goes on I think more and more people are going to drop unless they get the help they need. And for that to happen they need to feel that they can talk about these issues and not be judged for them
But the truth of the matter is, people are assholes. A lot of people who watch YouTube videos are assholes. A lot of people who make YouTube videos are assholes. And they don't care. And if there's blood in the water the Piranhas will come.
At this point it's really on fellow YouTubers and other content creators to speak out if they see something. To reach out to that person that they know and ask if they're okay, and be the ear that they can vent to.
Because no one's going to save us, but us. /rant #ripetika
