Hello friends + fellow instructors - I'm updating my senior/grad class on climate science, impacts, communication, policy and sol'ns + would love YOUR ideas on creative activities + assignments! The class is open to any major and isn't required, so students tend to be v engaged.
In the past, I've had them quantify their carbon footprint and that of an organization they are part of, and develop a plan for reducing their emissions; review and critique movies + books on climate change; argue for what global temperature target they'd consider "safe" ...
... write + record a Global Weirding-type episode; do a final project on any topic they want related to climate change; attend + report back to the class on community events for extra credit; analyse temperature + forcing data to see if current warming could be natural.
Because it's open to any field, so it attracts students from humanities, social sciences, engineering, business, law, natural + physical sciences and more, the assignments need to be fairly general in terms of the skills needed but rigorous enough to challenge today's smart kids!
Oh and I should add that I also ask them to read one popular news story about climate change each week (usually on the topic of the class) and briefly report on it to class. It's a great way to incorporate new content and spur interesting discussions!
