@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse Hi Heather - yes, this thought has occurred to climate scientists! Here are just a few examples of how the climate science community has been pushing back on false narratives for over a decade now. They span a very broad range, from scientific societies’ reports to social media:
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 1/ @skepticscience has collected, ranked, and developed basic, intermediate and advanced responses to nearly 200 of the most common myths about climate science. Their responses also include links to the original literature so readers can go deep. See: skepticalscience.com/argument.php
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 2/ for well over a decade now, climate scientists @ClimateOfGavin and @RasmusBenestad and other experts have been running realclimate.org, a commentary site on climate science for the interested public that frequently responds to false allegations about the science.
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse @ClimateOfGavin @RasmusBenestad 3/ Climate scientists also volunteer their time to the amazing @ClimateFdbk which has taken on the herculean task of peer-reviewing popular news articles on climate science and ranking them for scientific accuracy. See: climatefeedback.org
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 4/ In the 3rd US National Climate Assessment, we took the unprecedented step of writing a FAQ section that directly responded to the arguments of those who seek to dismiss climate science. You can read it here: nca2014.globalchange.gov/report/appendi…
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 5/ The @aaas led a report called "what we know" + made accompanying videos specifically aimed at addressing claims that we don't know enough about climate science to act. You can see it here: whatweknow.aaas.org
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 6/ Our @PBSDS series, Global Weirding, begins each short episode with a myth or question about climate science or solutions and tackles a few more in each episode. In 3 seasons + over 30 episodes, I'd say we've addressed at least 100 common myths! See: globalweirdingseries.com
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 7/ Led by @henrifdrake, scientists who are gamers are engaging the gaming community to talk about climate science and address common myths and misconceptions people often hear. Read: theverge.com/2018/10/10/179…
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 8/ I have answered 74 common questions about climate change on @Quora, including doing an AMA there and several AMA's on @reddit. Many other climate scientists do Reddit AMAs as well. See: quora.com/profile/Kathar…
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 9/ I often write articles about common myths we hear about climate change. Here's one in @wapo: washingtonpost.com/outlook/five-m… here's another in @Chatelaine women's magazine: chatelaine.com/living/climate… + @DrShepherd2013 has a Forbes column where he does this often: forbes.com/sites/marshall…
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 10/ Then regarding source credibility, @DeSmogBlog has put together an entire database of "usual suspects" including their credentials, affiliations and statements on climate change. You can find that here: desmogblog.com/global-warming…
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 11/ No list would be complete without mention of the amazing @CarbonBrief who researches and writes on important q's such as: "how have climate model predictions done relative to observations over the last 50 years?" Answer: darn well! carbonbrief.org/analysis-how-w…
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse 12/ And finally, here on twitter, we have #climatebrawl led by @GeraldKutney that will not let anyone get away with making false statements about climate science; and this list of nearly 2,500 scientists who do climate who are here to engage! twitter.com/KHayhoe/lists/…
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse The list wouldn't be complete w/o honourable mention of the amazing work of @NaomiOreskes + @EricPooley in documenting the sources financing climate denial + the techniques they use. If you haven't read or watched Merchants of Doubt, I highly recommend it! amazon.com/Merchants-Doub…
@HC_Richardson @KevinMKruse But never forget: despite the science-y sounding smokescreens we hear, 99% of the time climate denial has nothing to do with science. It’s solution aversion; and that’s why talking solutions is ofthen the most impt and impactful thing we can do. See:
Dang - can’t believe I forgot the amazing YouTube collections of @denial101x and @PeterWSinclair’s Climate Crocks series. Great resources as well!
