The concerning trend recently observed is the mistreatment of women and sometimes men. @WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
The way many men mistreat women, talk to (actually shout at), handle, objectify, sexualize, slap, and abuse (domestic, emotional, psychological, sexual, and verbal) is quite disturbing. @WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
From politicians to religious leaders, teachers, lecturers, drivers, domestic staff, bus conductors, drivers, cousins, colleagues, neighbours, friends, siblings and fathers.These persons should protect every woman. However not all of them do.@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
The media reports, stories, accounts and evidence of the inhumane way women are treated by certain men, authority figures in their lives, and strangers also. Some forms of abuse also happen to men, but usually on a low key. @WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
I did some reflection and research over the last few hours. By inspiration, I think I was able to connect a few dots.
@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
I believe the problem with some of the ugly manifestations of abusive behaviour evident in certain people in recent have a lot to do with a disconnectedness in their upbringing, mental health status and life style choices @MentallyAwareNG
The most dominant of them I think is exposure to pornography! Pornography is unhealthy for both men and women. For close to 70% of men, their first sexual experience was with an older woman and their first sexual exposure was pornography.
@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
Pornography degradingly objectifies women, distortedly disrespects them, inappropriately dehumanizes them, and distorts the real picture of the divine arrangements regarding consensual marital sexual intimacy.@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
Julia Long a Sociologist opined in the @washingtonpost that "It is crucial to understand pornography as a form of violence against women". She further stated that it's not just fantasy or abuse, but a cultural violence!

A blog post from @FightTheNewDrug shares these thoughts "While many people have helped to destroy stereotypes about women in so many parts of our society, we seem to have missed one major source: pornography".

@FightTheNewDrug conducted a study which showed that >80% of porn sites had scenes of physical violence & close to 50% had verbal aggression. Non-violent scenes are associated with dominance and control. fightthenewdrug.org/how-consuming-…

Availability &access to internet enabled devices, shows younger children age 9-12 years are more exposed to nudity, violence and pornography more than ever. Many porn sites are "open access" and just a click away. This distorts perception & reality
@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG Early and continuous exposure to pornography by men has been found to cause a warped view of women and increased tendencies of violent behaviour towards them, in women it causes low self esteem & seeking of validation by men predisposing them to abuse @WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
A study conducted by researchers @MiddlesexUni showed pornography is linked to female objectification, obsessive thoughts about sex and evidence that children/young people who watch porn tend to hold less progressive gender role attitudes.
@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
In a study carried out by Raquel K. Bergen and Kathleen A. Bogle information about women's experiences of sexual violence and their abusers' use of pornography were collected at a rape crisis center from 100 survivors.

The research of results by Bergen & Bogle showed that 28% of respondents reported that abusers of rape survivors had used pornography and that for 12% of the women, porn acts were imitated during the abusive incident.

Overall, the findings of the research support the hypothesis that there is an association between viewing/ watching pornography and violence against women

@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG @FightTheNewDrug shares that there's a relationship btwn porn and rape culture. "Rape culture sociological concept for settings in which rape is pervasive/ normalized due to societal attitudes about gender and sexuality".

@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG "Behaviors associated with rape culture include spreading myths,victim blaming, trivializing rape, denial of widespread rape, refusing to acknowledge the harm caused by sexual violence, or some combination of these.”

@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG
@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG The link between porn and violence, usually against women, can't be ignored. Researchers have found that even non-violent porn can influence the consumer to use forms of verbal manipulation and alcohol to push women into sex.

@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG "Pornography normalises abuse and violence", objectifies women. It makes men more aggressive, controlling, dominant and unfeeling triggering assault, incest, criminal rape, sexual abuse,molestation & trafficking.

@WARIF_NG @MentallyAwareNG Pornography misrepresents both men and women. Makes women have unrealistic views about how a woman should "look", and makes men think women are objects. #PornKillsLove
