The current state of things is that if you follow the 4 schools, Ash'ari/Maturidi, and tasawwuf, you only have two political visions to choose from. Either quietism, or you can follow the shaykhs who accept gov programs and naively think these govs are out to listen and help.
We need a third option built on Sufyan al-Thawri's principle that whenever a government body or ruler wants to deal with you, the predominant intention is to use religion to maintain their power. Let them use someone else. Don't let them use you. Don't lower yourself.
Be independent so you can speak freely.
The organization that's paying for whatever conference or panel is in control of the agenda. There will be spoken and unspoken red lines you cannot cross. But you might need to.
None of this is hard. This is common sense. And it was the policy of most tasawwuf-oriented shaykhs in the past.
Sayyidna 'Umar said, "Irecognize scoundrels when I see them, but I'm not one of them." A scoundrel is like a BS artist who will have you convinced he's out to do good and wants advice etc. Meanwhile, you're just a pawn in his agenda.
