Envy is a branch of stinginess. Stinginess (bukhl) in turn is a symptom of weak iman in Allah's qudra (ability) and generosity. The envious person views things as zero-sum: whatever good you get, must be coming off my plate; we can't all be happy because goodness is finite.
Iman, in contrast, tells us that "If every one of you, human and jinn, asked for every single thing their heart desired, and it was given to them, this would not decrease Allah's kingdom in any way."
Thus, the believer should actually be happy when others thrive, and you should not believe that it's coming off of your plate. In fact, when others succeed, it's a demonstration of Allah's generosity, so ask for it yourself.

After the thread on evil, someone asked... But why pain? Why couldn't God have created all those things you listed without pain? Why not create achievement without pain? Free-will without pain. Compassion without pain, etc. It's a good q and here are some asnwers. THREAD
1 - The premise. The premise here is that pain is morally bad. Something a good God should never create. Remember, the whole reason we shifted from evil to pain was to avoid the subjective area of moral judgements. Saying pain is evil is returning back to that subjective ground.
So the premise itself that pain is bad and is something a good God would never create is invalid to begin with. You would have to then proceed to define what a "good" God is first.

Atheists might argue: you claim God is capable, but every creature has some flaw.

Response: Whatever you see missing in one creation is found in another. By that, He shows He is able and therefore the "flaw" you see is intentional and by design for a wisdom.
Humans for example, cannot withstand the elements. That shouldn't be a proof that God can't create something that withstand the elements since we have creatures that exist in the desert and in the arctics and the depths of the sea.
His ability is manifest; He has simply been selective about where He placed those qualities.

@jeffraikes @Microsoft @gatesfoundation So many conversations about wealth, power, and plutocracy run into the same MarketWorld trope: "Well, you're assuming things are zero-sum, but really the pie is infinitely expandable."

But it's not always.

I pushed Jeff on this, and I am very impressed to see this rumination.
The simple example I offered Jeff was the time that members of Congress spend listening to people. It's finite. And every hour they are listening to a corporate lobbyist is an hour they are not listening to someone on the wrong side of power. You can't grow that pie.

Good people do bad things.
Those bad things don’t nullify their good acts and shouldn’t be used to define them as people.

Bad people do good things.
Appreciating those good acts isn’t the same as excusing all their bad ones.

Twitter gets us in the habit of believing otherwise.
Life is complicated and lived in large part in the grey areas.

Acts are more significant than words.

Patterns are more significant than single acts.

Nonetheless, words and single acts can make a difference.

As I said, life is complicated.
On Twitter, what we see again and again is when an actual (or perceived) bad person does or says something good, everything they’ve ever done that is bad is immediately brought up and regurgitated into the public discourse.

There’s minimal positive reinforcement.

Play that out.

Good morning. The House Committee on Foreign Affairs meets with a panel of experts today to discuss climate change and its interconnected relationship to national security.

This interplay is one that often goes underreported.
This is unfortunate because when looking at climate through this lens, it is arguably the best time for ppl who disagree on the subject to form common ground.
i.e. Dont think water scarcity is caused by climate change but understand scarcity leads to conflict?
Start there.
One of the panelists this morning is Sherri Goodman (bio below) and according to her opening remarks, the time is now for America to get serious about the interconnectedness of climate change, war, famine, political unrest and terrorism.
