so a friend of mine posted an artwork challenge, asking designers to create artworks and submit for his single, winner gets an amount of money, and i scrolled through seeing designers hauling insults at him. Here’s my reply to one of them.

“i get your point but I honestly think you’re looking at it wrongly, first you must realize that no opportunities created by someone is for you, its mostly to help themselves or whatever agenda they have, you might not see it immediately but there’s almost always one.

Before 2018, i entered countless competitions, it cost me money for studio sessions, sometimes I’d travel to lagos from school just so i can enter those competitions

none of these competitions had monetary value, just exposure and connections, good thing i won all of them cos duhh best rapper in africa, dishing out Ls at every opportunity

but my point is as a creative its your choice to look for opportunities to showcase yourself, and if you feel the opportunity presented doesn’t give you the needed exposure, you just ignore and wait for other opportunities.

because there’d always be competitions, nicki minaj is running a megatron challenge to promote HERSELF but people are getting millions of views and kicking off their own careers because she reposted them

even those who don’t get reposted get support cos friends and fans do everything they can to get nicki to notice them

would it make sense to tell nicki “hey nicki, I’m a professional rapper in my own rights, pay me if I’m to create content for you to promote your music”? Naaahhhh

I can either choose to do it if i feel there’s something to gain, or ignore if there’s nothing in there for me. But you can’t go rubbishing the idea of competitions cos there’s people who’re looking for such opportunities to get some much need exposure

maybe I won’t be where i am if not for those kinda competitions, cos my career started after i won Terry tha rapman’s Zombie competition.

Its fine if you feel you’ve reached the point that you think you don’t need any exposure, all you need is to be paid for your work. thats great. But don’t try to close doors for people who aren’t at that stage yet. Thank you 🙏
