As recently as 2017, @MemphisChamber marketed the city as having a workforce at wage rates lower than most of the country.

Median household income for AA is around $33K. 43% of workers earn less than $15/hr.

But yeah, tell me more about affordability.
If you want to #MoveToMemphis, please do. But come with your eyes wide open.

80% of folks here make less than $79K.

Half make less than $37K.
This is 2010 Census data (or maybe 2012-2016 ACS) but either way, it’s a bit dated.

Median household income for whites is just $57K. Blacks, about $30K.

So yeah, you can ball out in Memphis with $50K or even $100K but most households don’t make that.
Peep this. See how few households earn $100K, comparatively? And how thick those bands at the bottom are?
Percentage of Memphis households making less than $100K?

87 percent.
Memphis is way too close to the bottom here.
Memphis has beautiful people and beautiful spaces and food and music and energy.

Also, this is a city that is very poor. Any growth is largely bypassing a majority of Memphians, most of whom are people of color.
Like read this. Seriously.
Also this.
Anyway, let me go to bed. If you #MoveToMemphis, come to help disrupt the status quo, not just ball out because your coins can go far in a city where so many are broke.
That first sentence under the “Ready to Work” subhead: “Memphis offers a diverse, metropolitan workforce at wage rates that are lower than most other parts of the country.”

This will never not be galling.

It’s like: Look, we have labor for cheap! Y’all come!
