I happened to be walking by the @Newseum where they have the selected front pages out on display. On a day that saw the names of the El Paso dead released and how many Latinos were killed - these are the nation’s headlines. Shocking. And proves my point. Here they are:
This is how many in the media chose to depict targeted violence against Latinos.

Almost ALL of those killed in #ElPasoShooting were #Latinos. And yet I see no mention of this in headlines or in chyrons. The largest minority in this county was targeted. Why are the headlines about Trump? elpasotimes.com/story/news/201…
There is a serious problem here. The focus is almost exclusively on the president. Latinos are just props in some larger narrative. Its horrific.
When the stories are written and the headlines and the news briefs overlook (I’m being generous here) who was targeted , you have to ask yourself why. I seriously hope every news show and Sunday show and opinion page allows voices from our community to be heard.

My thoughts are these. A) I'm bilingual. I'm not affecting an accent or trying to be pretentious. I speak the language. I think people aren't used to hearing things pronounced correctly because we are not used to hosts from different backgrounds on the air.
B) Actually everyone tries to pronounce the words correctly. At NPR we ask native speakers to give us the best pronunciation of their city or name and then we give it a try. It is anglicized only because we frequently fail at getting it right. The anglo version is imperfect.

Just last week, the FBI Director said what many of us already knew: that white supremacy is the most dangerous terror threat in our country.

Since then, there have been two white supremacist mass-shootings.

Yet, nobody in the media is calling this terrorism.
They have an ideology: white supremacy.

They have a target: anybody who isn't white and "race traitors".

They have a political goal: to make the USA only a home for whites.

This is terrorism.
Worse off, the major media organizations will go out of their way in the next 48 hours to paint the El Paso white-supremacist terrorist as a quiet man who liked to barbecue on the weekends with his (white) neighbors or something equally inane.
