This should be leading the news everywhere nytimes.com/2019/05/06/cli… via ⁦@nytimes
from Cnn: Their landmark report paints a bleak picture of a planet ravaged by an ever-growing human population, whose insatiable consumption is destroying the natural world.
It is the news media’s greatest challenge that we have trouble prioritizing coverage of what is the main existential threat of our time. The main reason? The audience thinks it’s a bummer.
Literally this report should be breaking news. And yet we as a species have trouble grasping the unfolding calamity. Gotta tell you as a person in the media I think about this a whole lot.
I spoke with a person who does outreach on climate change at the @NatlAquarium and she said people don’t want to hear facts. They only can connect emotionally on the issue when it’s framed hopefully. And of course the media deals in facts.
So this is a story we did yesterday as part of my series on climate adaptation. And you’ll note everyone is trying real hard to be hopeful. npr.org/2019/05/05/720…
It’s astonishing to me when in news meetings newsroom leaders don’t put climate change at the center of our agendas. In any case, reality - or facts - have a way of shifting the conversation. And I do believe the conversation is shifting. Happy Monday!
