Ok. This is gonna be the start of the mega-thread for the trip.

I start this thread with excitement, nervousness, humility, and with intention.

We introduced ourselves and “invited” folks to join us spiritually. I brought #Pittsburgh’s religious leadership with me. My hope is that we can become motivated to engage deeper in this work, starting with myself.
Next, we continued with stories from the border and a broad overview of some of the legal situations here. #Metering, #MPP (Migrant Protection Protocol), and the situation with #MexicanRefugees. More on that as we get our legal briefing later tonight.

The #ElPasoSyllabus:

It’s been 2 weeks since the horrendous shooting in El Paso, the murder of 22 innocent individuals & wounding of 24 others. 2 weeks, #ElPasoShooting is no longer trending, most news outlets have dropped the story, the process of forgetting has begun.
There are several things that may explain why we’ve begun to forget El Paso. Many people don’t know the city and it may seems geographically far removed from the worldview of folks unfamiliar with the Southwest.
The victims of the shooting, mainly Mexican/Mexican American people, may seem unfamiliar to some Americans, beyond the rhetoric/stereotyping of the immigration reform debate. Many people probably don’t see Mexican-origin people as the “normal” victims of racist violence.

I don't think most people understand the dailiness of #gunviolence in America. This incident happened within less than a mile of our house. There have been three men shot to death in front of our house in the past 4yrs as I've recorded in real time on here. That's madness.
The good news about the #PhillyShooting is no one was killed. Women and kids were extricated safely. The 6 cops had minor gunshots wounds, the hostages were safely extricated and the shooter was unharmed. That's all amazing. But the shooter fired hundreds of rounds over 8hrs.
This is another story of civilians with arsenals of weapons. That should be illegal. The cop who was shot in the head missed death by a literal inch. He has two small kids. In the #ElPasoShooting and #DaytonShooting more than a dozen kids were left motherless, some newborns.

1/ On Saturday 3 August 2019, Patrick Wood Crusius allegedly went on a shooting rampage inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. He traveled about 1,050 km (~650 miles) from his home in Allen, Texas to do so.
2/ Tragically, 22 people have died while another 24 were wounded. About 30 minutes prior to the shooting, Crusius published manifesto online, ranting against immigration and declaring that “this attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.”

In April, @MarieDennise & I met a beautiful El Paso family that illustrated the city's cross-border identity. ( This week we were back reporting on the #elpasoshooting & were horrified to hear they were among the first victims.…
They were raising money outside the Walmart for their 10-year-old daughter Karina’s soccer team, selling the traditional Mexican snacks of chicharrónes and aguas frescas when the gunman started firing.
The victims from the fundraiser were quintessential El Pasoans: Hispanic and bilingual with deep roots in Texas and Mexico. Their lives revolve around their children’s baseball and soccer teams. Their lives spanned the border.

Pastor Michael Grady, just talked with Anderson Cooper on @AC360. He was breathtakingly good. His daughter, Michelle, was severely wounded at the WalMart in #ElPasoShooting. She's in critical.
A big man with a generous manner, he spoke about her, his wife, the shooting.
Grady has the imposing manner of a black preacher--you can tell he gives a powerful sermon. Grady also spoke about Trump & how lacking in passion his speech on hate was. He said, "Words matter. How you use your words matters." He said words can be healing, but Trump's weren't.
Grady talked about how there have been no consequences to these shootings. Of Trump he said once words are out there you can't take them back. he said "words of divisiveness and hatred matter. You don't know who will receive them or how they will be received."

Re: #DoSomething
People have been asking the government to “do something.” That almost sounds like we are clueless, like we have no idea how we could deal with gun violence in America. Like we are little kids, asking daddy to pretty please _do something, do anything_.
As if they know something we don’t. But that is not the case. We know EXACTLY what can be done. So does the Senate.
There are currently 2 life-saving bills that have passed the House of Rep., but are waiting for @senatemajldr & his Senate to bring up for a vote, & pass.
Both of these bills are VERY POPULAR and have research to back them up. Not pie in the sky. Not “something, anything,” but actual plans.

What are those?

The first is close the background checks loophole.

Almost ALL of those killed in #ElPasoShooting were #Latinos. And yet I see no mention of this in headlines or in chyrons. The largest minority in this county was targeted. Why are the headlines about Trump?…
There is a serious problem here. The focus is almost exclusively on the president. Latinos are just props in some larger narrative. Its horrific.
When the stories are written and the headlines and the news briefs overlook (I’m being generous here) who was targeted , you have to ask yourself why. I seriously hope every news show and Sunday show and opinion page allows voices from our community to be heard.

So, today, just TODAY, I spoke with seven (7) reporters from different news outlets about violent white supremacy. In doing this work for 30yrs, that's a one-day record.
Here are a few highlights, in summation, about Things I Often Say, about the current White Supremacist Moment:
(Q: how are things different w/ White Supremacy since the Internet?) A: Things are both the SAME and DIFFERENT. They're the same, in the sense that white supremacy is a centuries-old ideology + it's continuing, much the same, over time.

The President consoles the nation reaching out to all and condemning hate. #ElPasoShooting #OhioShooting
Here is the problem👇🏾below. Instead of coming together, they politicize the matter. Proof they wouldn’t be able to console America in the time of a crisis.
Joe is mad Trump is President. He just won’t get over it. Such a hateful man.

For those politicizing the below picture, here is the obvious indisputable differences: One (Patrick Crusius) decided to listen to the instructions of the police while the other (Eric Garner) decided to defy the police. Actions have consequences.
Not that Eric Garner deserved his fate, but wouldn't it had been better for Garner and others to comply and live to see another day? Then file a complaint? Instructions not heard. #ElPasoShooting #EricGarner #OhioShooting

I WILL PRAY. AND I WONT STOP. And yes—If it were my own wife and two children, I would still pray & would want to be prayed for. I respect those that don’t pray—but please stop disrespecting those who do. Not ALL prayer is “TOKEN”, empty/cliche.
I see people say that praying accomplishes nothing. But what has cussing/fussing/name-calling or ranting done? THAT’S what’s truly ineffective. That being said—For me to stop praying means now trusting in myself and others alone, with MY LIFE. NO WAY. Not enough 💪🏾, ♥️ or wisdom.
Man can’t fix what’s broken in our world. That’s TOO BIG a task for us to do BY OURSELVES. We are talking about humans willing to kill other humans. That kind of problem begins in the 🧠 and ♥️ —So If I think God can lead me in addressing the head & heart issues, why not ask?
