Many people believe that right-wing ideology is what drives the GOP. This confuses the means with ends. The end is personal enrichment of the GOP ruling class. Power is necessary for the really big payoffs, therefore must be maintained at all cost.
The ideology is strictly for the rubes to get them to vote GOP, even though it impoverishes them. Race is the linchpin because it underpins the issues that really animate Republican voters--immigration, welfare, law & order, guns and so many others are race-based issues.
Historically, the "Bourbons" of the South pioneered this strategy, using racism to keep poor whites and blacks divided, so that they could not unite for policies that would benefit both groups. The division kept the Bourbons in power to use government for personal enrichment.
