Defra has confirmed to me that there are no grants for creating woodland through natural regeneration.
Only for planting trees. These tend to be bought from nurseries (sometimes with added diseases) and stuck in plastic tubes, many of which then litter the countryside for years.
This is madness. Why can't landowners and tenants receive grants for letting nature do what it does best, ie recover? Why are they paid only for ugliness: rows of trees of the same age and structure, sheathed in plastic?
.@DefraGovUK's exact words, for those who doubt this madness is really its policy, are: "Current woodland creation grant incentives do not include support for natural regeneration".
The UK govt should follow the hierarchy approach proposed by @SteveCJjones
1. Entirely natural regeneration wherever possible
2. Assisted regen, where 1 is not possible
3. Planting where 1 and 2 are not possible.
