These are tough times for beef farmers. The sector seems to be collapsing in the UK. Rather than endlessly propping it up, it would be a better use of our money to pay the farmers to do something else on their land. Preferably #rewilding. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotla…
With the amount we have spent subsidising farming in the UK, we could have bought all the agricultural land in Britain several times over. Yet we have almost no say in how the land - or the money - is used. This is profoundly undemocratic.
This is our money. It should be used for the benefit of society as a whole, rather than just for the benefit of one commercial sector, which happens to be among the most destructive on Earth. Where we are taxed, we should be represented. Yet our views don't seem to count.
We don't give incandescent lightbulb manufacturers public money to keep them afloat. Why do we spend our precious public budget, desperately needed for essential services, propping up another highly damaging product that's losing its market - beef?
