Anyway, it's fine because Judge Stuart Couch totally won't do it again. We know he won't because he was *promoted to the Board of Immigration Appeals,* a totally appropriate reward for a man who used the power of a federal appointment to inflict mortal terror upon a baby

Appealing deportation orders is about to cost about three times as much as the actual value of my car
The current #immigrationcourt fee is $110.

AFAIK, the cost to appeal some visas through USCIS is the most expensive appellate fee anywhere in the U.S. right now. This raises even that by $325, and will deny access to justice for some of the most vulnerable people in the system.
("Raises" in the poker sense, I haven't seen any indication that the $675 AAO fee is changing.)

Long story that would take several dozen tweets to explain, but I just asked the judge for more than the DA's office wanted to resolve a plea in my client's favor in a way that would avoid immigration consequences in a state criminal case and they still objected. Good times.
He's still going to come out ok with immigration, but could have done without the prosecution's bullheaded insistence (at their own expense) that there needed to be a possibility of vastly disproportionate immigration consequences just before he gets residency
Imagine a scenario in which the bank has offered you a reasonable loan and you try to haggle for a higher-interest one and they still insist that you can only have the lower-interest one bc it's going to hurt your credit score more (or whatever) and we're getting close

Trump ended #TPS for #ElSalvador on 9/9/19. Extension was granted to 1/20/20--but #TPSElSalvador holders have no proof of this beyond USCIS website, and it's causing all kinds of chaos around here. Cruelty upon cruelty.
So, so tired of hearing #MAGA nation scream at my clients to do things "the right way" as they gleefully watch this administration rip up the very few options they may have had left.
To be clear, #TPS recipients are still in lawful immigration status for the next few months... but a substantial number of them don't actually know that and are now unnecessarily terrified that they are undocumented. Also seeing them (wrongfully) lose jobs, cancel intl travel

Sometimes people ask me why I a) have my pronouns listed in my bio if I’m cisgendered, and b) why I’ve included the part “they/them if you prefer” if pronouns are supposed to be about what each person prefers themselves. This weekend at Drag Con & Bushwig had SO many examples.
Firstly, everyone should have their pronouns in their profiles. We should be normalizing asking, stating, and openly discussing pronouns period, and we should be doing so for everyone, not just openly trans people. You NEVER know how a person identities and cis is not default.
My pronouns are in my bio because a) no one should assume I’m female regardless of how I present, and b) pronoun discussion is good and should be normal and I’m no exception, plus I want people to feel comfortable asking mine, telling me theirs, and speaking to me, so there it is

Here are some real life examples of clients we've represented (Warning: distressing words)
Young woman and her boyfriend open an Internet cafe. MS13 shows up, kidnaps the boyfriend, threatens to rape woman and kill their child. They move, file police report. MS13 is notified and beatings begin again.

Asylum granted in US, 2016.
Man participates in democracy protest in mid-east. Arrested, beaten, detained without access to counsel. Police broke his phone during beatings, temporarily delaying identification of his family members.

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).
