Dear Friends, my account has been reinstated but the tweet that lead to my account being locked was deleted after I was informed by @TwitterSupport that I lost my appeal. I'd like to share a few thoughts here about how although I mis-stepped this sanction was deeply problematic.
@TwitterSupport On Friday US Attorneys in DC District Court uploaded a pretrial joint stipulation document in the prosecution of Roger Stone Jr. The document contained details about purported communications with Erik Prince, Keith Schiller, Steve Bannon, Donald Trump.
@TwitterSupport The 47 page document was uploaded to the DC Court's ECF system which is available to the public via Pacer. 2 of the 47 pages contained various cell phone numbers for Erik Prince, Keith Schiller, Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, Sam Nunberg, and others.
@TwitterSupport This document was filed into the public record, was not placed under seal, and no portions of it were redacted before being uploaded to the system on Friday.
@TwitterSupport The document remained on the public system and available for anyone to review it through the weekend. On Tuesday this changed when reportedly someone at the DOJ realized a mistake was made and moved to have the document placed under seal. A short time later my account was locked.
@TwitterSupport I was notified by twitter that they determined I violated their policy regarding the "posting of private information." help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-p…
@TwitterSupport While @TwitterSupport offers an option to appeal the sanction the process is opaque, your appeal argument is limited to the length of a 220 character tweet, and choosing to do so will result in your account remaining locked for the duration of the review.
@TwitterSupport I chose to appeal, had my account locked for the duration of the review, twitter later informed me I lost my appeal, and in order to reactivate my accounts functionality I must delete the tweet in question and doing so would forgo my right to appeal.🤦‍♀️
@TwitterSupport How this was brought to Twitter's attention was also bizarre.
@TwitterSupport On Tuesday two twitter users @CountDankulaTV & @CarpeDonktum, whose presence was celebrated at the July 11 "White House Social Media Summit," started tweeting grievances about my posting a photograph of Kellyanne Conway with a member of the Proud Boys.
@TwitterSupport @CountDankulaTV @CarpeDonktum Following their tweets I received a laundry list of threatening and harassing messages and conspiratorial banter in my mentions —thats par for the course no question, but it also appears I may have been mass reported by a portion of their followers.
@TwitterSupport @CountDankulaTV @CarpeDonktum Let me be very clear, that I am not suggesting either @CarpeDonktum or @CountDankulaTV encouraged their fans to do this, but this appears to have been a byproduct of their drawing attention to this 2 month old tweet.
@TwitterSupport @CountDankulaTV @CarpeDonktum And this opens larger questions regarding the letter of the law vs. the spirit of the law within Twitter's @Policy.
@TwitterSupport @CountDankulaTV @CarpeDonktum @Policy Twitter's @Policy regarding the "posting of private information" is an important one, and in spirit should be used to protect marginalized communities and vulnerable individuals who could be subjected to harassment, threats, doxing, or violence.
@TwitterSupport @CountDankulaTV @CarpeDonktum @Policy I refuse to consider the posting of a public court document found on pacer to be analogous to that of posting the private information of an individual. It is by legal definition "public record" once posted by the court.
@TwitterSupport @CountDankulaTV @CarpeDonktum @Policy I also reject the notion that Donald Trump, Erik Prince, Roger Stone, Steve Bannon, and Keith Schiller are analogous to vulnerable "private individuals." They are public officials and overtly public people. Full stop.
@TwitterSupport @CountDankulaTV @CarpeDonktum @Policy And what kind of janky operation is @TwitterSupport running if clowns like @CarpeDonktum, @CountDankulaTV, and their fans can put their thumb on the scales of what is permissible speech on this platform? Twitter get your house in order.
@TwitterSupport @CountDankulaTV @CarpeDonktum @Policy Lastly twitter, how the fuck is anyone going to take you seriously when two years after the fact you still allow users who organized the violence in Charlottesville, VA to use your platform with impunity? ...but by all means protect Erik Prince from me posting a public record.
@TwitterSupport @CountDankulaTV @CarpeDonktum @Policy Footnote: A top-tier media outlet has also uploaded the unreacted document in question and shared it online. I won't name that outlet in order to prevent the same happening to them, but I wonder if I was a large company with massive clout if this even would have happened.
