For my next "Present Tense" column at @FilmComment , I wrote about one of my favorite contemporary actors, Matthias Schoenaerts. filmcomment.com/blog/present-t…
@FilmComment I mainly focus on his performances in 4 films: BULLHEAD:
@FilmComment The great RUST AND BONE:
@FilmComment DISORDER:
@FilmComment and this year's THE MUSTANG.
@FilmComment Speaking of RUST AND BONE - and looping it back to a previous column - on "back-ting" - filmcomment.com/blog/present-t… - he has a great "back-ting" moment in RUST AND BONE (much of it is filmed from behind) - when she calls him out of the blue. You feel it all through his back.
@FilmComment Back in 2016, I reviewed DISORDER for Ebert, and got to develop some of my thoughts on what Schoenaerts is about and why he's special. rogerebert.com/reviews/disord…
@FilmComment I've been following him closely since he first arrived. I've seen all the short films he made before BULLHEAD. I find his work not just good, but exciting. So thank you in advance for reading! filmcomment.com/blog/present-t…
@FilmComment Also, I take any chance I can get to praise Ralph Richardson's performance in THE HEIRESS.
@FilmComment Not incl. in the column, but this struck me: in interview a/b RUST AND BONE, MS was asked what was his favorite scene in the film. He said the one btw Cotillard and the orca. A scene he is not even in. To me, that has always spoken volumes about him, and who he is as an actor.
@FilmComment It's like Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki saying that one of their fav episodes of #Supernatural is "Death's Door," an episode not focused on them at all - but on Jim Beaver and Steven Turner. JA and JP both said that that ep made them proud of being on the show.
@FilmComment When an actor says something like this - when someone like Matthias Schoenaerts picks out a scene he's not even in as his favorite - it tells you a LOT about who these people are as actors, why they're "in this thing" and where their focus lies.
