Happy birthday Otis Redding. I just finished reading a book where the journey of Stax is a huge component - if you visit the Stax Museum in Memphis (which you should), there's a whole Otis Redding ROOM.
Such an enormous loss. Bah. It sucks so bad.
Here's a clip of Otis Redding performing "Try a Little Tenderness" during a tour of Stax artists and it is ... out of this freakin world.
A couple words a/b above performance: this is old-school, the performer in charge of the journey of the song - from A to B or Z - w/ his pure musicianship as well as working the audience as well as his awareness of how deep - how far - he can go.
He does ... what ... 5 encores? and when he comes back out - the song is still churning away in him - at the same level - or even MORE heightened - he is NOT. DONE. He has MORE TO DO, to say, to communicate.
You think it can't get more intense. But there are no depths/heights he can't reach. This reminds me of something Kathy Bates said when she came and spoke at an acting class I took: "If you have a gift - you must give it away. Every time you work. Give it away."
He has so much to give away in that performance - it's literally pouring out of him like the sweat drenching his shirt. It's a guy, a microphone, a band, and an audience. and LOOK where he takes it.
Take 7 minutes out of your day - clear the decks - and watch that clip.
