1. There was a time when the question everyone asked was: when will he go? This reductionist approach was encapsulated in the call: “Mugabe Must Go!” It was a convenient vehicle but misleading to the extent that it did not fully capture the complexity of THE SYSTEM of repression.
2. This obsession with #Mugabe has seen similarly misguided attempts to characterise Mugabe’s death as signifying a critical juncture for Zimbabwe. It is not. The critical juncture, if we call it that was supposed to have happened 2 years ago when he was ousted by the coup.
3. The fact of the matter is that it was of little significance because THE SYSTEM remained in place. The critical juncture may be traced back to 2008 when a subtle coup took place, with the military ensuring Mugabe & ZANU PF remained in power after facing defeat to MT & the MDC

1. In trying to exonerate itself FSG says it has never been contracted by Command Agriculture. Then it makes a classic confession & avoidance: we were contracted by “a private company” to which we supplied fertiliser which was then supplied to Command Agriculture (paragraph 7)
2. What this means:

a. There’s a confession by FSG that it supplied fertiliser to Command Agriculture albeit through a third party “private company” but it clumsily avoids naming this middleman which received the product en route to Command Agriculture
b. If FSG really wanted to lift the fog it would have named this middleman “private company”. By not naming the middleman they have raised more suspicions over the deal. Who owns the private company? Did it go to tender for the Command Agriculture deal? How much was it paid?

1. Tsvangirai once told Zuma at a bilateral, “President, Zimbabwe is not a foreign policy issue for you. It’s a domestic issue.” He meant challenges in Zimbabwe directly impacted South Africa. Therefore, South Africa could not afford to play a blind eye. voanews.com/episode/botswa…
2. SA could not afford to ignore what was happening in Zim or to pretend that all was well. MT cited the influx of immigrants and the consequent pressure upon SA’s social services. It was important to stop mollycoddling the regime. I don’t think the message was understood.
3. The same point applies to Botswana and other countries in the region @OfficialMasisi Zimbabwe is more than a foreign policy issue. The SADC statement was completely out of sync with the situation in Zimbabwe. There’s no new Chapter contrary to their pontifications.

I’d prefer it if people drank in moderation, but I’m not an advocate for teetotalism.

I do, however, think people should be informed of the risks of anything they do, if they want to be.

The piece starts out by saying that there is a drive to treat drinkers like smokers.

That seems to conflate saying that alcohol can be harmful with saying people shouldn’t drink alcohol.

They aren’t the same.

I also don’t know which organisation runs this campaign…

As a cancer researcher & science communicator, I have very mixed feelings on proposed #alcohol cancer labelling for drinks. I'll try here to elucidate why, and you can tell me whether you agree or not (1/n)
...so firstly, is alcohol a carcinogen? Almost undoubtedly, yes. IARC grade it a class 1 carcinogen, alongside asbestos, ionizing radiation, & smoking. We even know some mechanisms of damage. So labels should be a no-brainer, right? (2/n)
...well not quite. The real question isn't just whether something causes cancer (oxygen, processed meat, and sunlight are also Class 1 carcinogens for example) but how much it increases our risk of getting cancer. We need both bits of information to make a call (3/n)
