One downside of social media is it brings together people with outrageous views who might otherwise never have found anyone to share them with. For instance, imagine a situation in which one person per town holds a certain deplorable stance.
Before social media they would have had no way to discuss it. Now, they can connect for free straight into a community of thousands of like-minded souls. This creates an echo chamber, gives them the mistaken impression that their fringe worldview is mainstream, and reinforces it.
("Look, I must be right to think XYZ horrid thing. Because here are all these people all over the country (or the world) who also think XYZ.")

So if it seems like everything's getting more and more extreme, that's because it is. And we have social media to "thank" for that.
