There's been a lot of debate about the LDs' move to support revoke. Here are three reasons why I think it is the right move, not only for the LDs, but also for the other opposition parties. 1/
I am assuming that their policy is aimed at those who accept the principle that it is legitimate to end the Brexit process with a remain outcome. The question is how best to reach a remain destination. 2/
First, it provides a way to 'make it stop' within days of a GE. People are tired of Brexit. Johnson's pledge to get it done will appeal to many. The opposition would do well to offer a clear, decisive alternative. 3/
Second, if Johnson wins the GE, he wins a mandate to deliver his Brexit (I can't see him offering a PV on his Brexit v Remain...). Those who want to remain can (and should) seek to obtain a mandate for their preferred Brexit outcome. 4/
And, third, the PV (the current preference of Lab) would bring further Brexit delay; and (as many twitter discussions are showing) framing the PV question is no easy task. It is very likely that, in a PV, many leave voters will be left with no credible (to them) option. 5/
The idea that they will more easily be reconciled to remain following a 'rigged' PV than to remain following a GE defeat from parties with a mandate to revoke is, to me, far fetched. 6/
None of this is to suggest that revoke is an easy option to take. It will not end the divisions. The only way to do that is - post revoke - to embark on an honest national conversation about the UK's relationship with the EU and the wider world. 7/7
