Yesterday the Supreme Court ruled that the Queen is not permitted to refuse the PM's advice regarding the exercise of a Prerogative, even in cases where that advice is to do something improper, & that the only mechanism to block the PM in such a case is the Supreme Court.
That ruling, therefore, in terms, formally abolishes the Monarchy's role as a constitutional check or balance on the improper exercise of Executive power. It literally, formally, & in terms, declared that the UK no longer has a Constitutional Monarchy.
The govt, in accepting the Supreme Court's judgement, thus formally accepted that the Monarchy is not permitted to refuse the PM's advice & that it is for the Supreme Court, not the Monarch to block the improper exercise of a prerogative. Thus ended the Constitutional Monarchy.
Since the Supreme Court, &, by acquiescence the govt & thus the Monarchy itself, has formally declared the ending of the Constitutional Monarchy, that leaves us with the qstn: Do we want to retain a purely ritual monarch? I say no.
