THERMOS, BY Sammy J
Thermos, oh thermos, oh keeper of heat
My portable, potable, mid-morning treat
I made you this morning, I packed you away
And now you stay hot for me all through the day
Filled from the kettle and mixed with a spoon
Coffee and milk in a watery tomb
Not I for the coffee shop mid morning dash
No hipster barista-made peppermint brew
Could ever compete with the sweet taste of you
You’re simple and honest and happy and hot
I drink when I’m thirsty, I stop when I’m not
Willing me on with your liquid reward
You ask for so little yet offer so much
You’re warm on the inside but cool to the touch
And when I open you greet me with steam
A nasal embrace of my face with caffeine
Never complaining, completing your task
Solid and stoic, you never give up
And your lid, when removed, can be used as a cup
And the taste of your coffee is frankly obscene
And I’ll burn my tongue twice by eleven fifteen
But sleep is an illness
And you’re my vaccine.
