One thing to remember: setting up Medicare was very easy, it took 1 year. From a 1992 panel of the people who assembled Medicare.

They had 9 months (!) for enrollment. Mailed out cards that said "check yes/no for Part B," rapidly got a 95% response rate. nasi.org/research/2001/…
Reflecting, they note that Congress would have rejected a two-year implementation period, "a real question about how much lead time, politically, you can ask for" heh.

@JWMason1 Funny that it is randomized because servicing was so awful a judge tossed the debt out. Impossible for students to know who their servicer will be, and even expert court watchers wouldn't know how to call the case, so it really is as random as we'll ever see on forgiveness. /2
@JWMason1 We know there's serious life consequences correlated with student debt, but there's always a question of causation. Maybe people who don't want to marry, move out of their parents' house, have kids, or start businesses load up on debt, rather than the other way around? /3

I still find that people don't actually believe college was free for most of our history.

Here's a 1951 UCLA catalogue casually says tuition is free; fees are $400 in today's dollars. Watch out for that out of state tuition, almost $2K in today's dollars! registrar.ucla.edu/Portals/50/Doc…
I bring it up because I'm reading @caitlinzaloom's book on middle-class college debt, and looking at these older materials there's simply none of the anxiety about financing that permeates all the discussions today. Catalogue is like "oh yeah, nominal fees, keep a budget too."
@caitlinzaloom I should like write a real grant to do this, but I should get on a project where I have a US map on a website. You can click on your state, and get two centuries of scans of a yearly "yup, it's free" documents for the flagship college until the 1970s. It's was true!

For those reading the debates over student loans, here are 3 tells I use to see if the writer is conveying the problem. 1st is whether they are clear that, as a % of income, lower-income people have higher debt burdens and it's gotten worse. From Fed: federalreserve.gov/newsevents/spe… /1
You see a lot about how the absolute dollars of debt are higher further up the income chain, but we think of burdens as in percent of incomes, and the burden is real and severe for those at the bottom, particularly people of color. This drives the call for debt cancellation. /2
2nd tell concerns empirical point that monthly student loan payments for those paying, as a % of budgets (so payments/income), have been flat and low in past decade. A tell is whether this is seen as encouraging, as many see it, or as the absolute societal disaster that it is. /3

This programme investigates the claim that young trans identified people need fast, surgical intervention as otherwise they may end their lives. The claim that 40% of young transidentified people will attempt suicide.
There is currently a law being proposed that 15 year olds should be able to access surgery, with or without parental consent.

We start with Aleksa Lindberg, a transwoman who went through transition quite some years ago. Aleksa seems very level headed and explains very clearly
her experience of dysphoria from a young age.

The presenter agrees that this has been essential help for trans identified people, but that their has been a worrying increase of young girls identifying as trans many of whom have several other psychological diagnoses.

One of the things fiction editors never talk much about (to me) is the emotional labor of editing.

Every time an editor reads a submission, we need to be emotionally open to the effects of the story, with a clear awareness (if possible) of what the writer is intending to do.
It's the only way to be fair to the story =and= to our readers, who will be coming to the story with that same openness.
But then we have to turn that off. Evaluating whether a story works or doesn't work requires detachment and self-awareness about one's reactions. So does evaluating whether a story that does work is a good fit for the market at that time or not.

One thing I hate in UP is : most of them keep chewing tobacco / paan / Hans/ jardha etc., & keep on spitting in the streets, buildings , stairs etc., it's nauseating, nasty & highly unhygienic. Both men & women chew this nasty stuff.

Kindly ban spitting within 300 meter radius of Kashi Vishwanath mandir. In a 4 feet wide pathway around the temple people keep spitting pan on either sides of the pathway. Most people walk without slippers in these areas.
There are enough police in the 300 meter radius around Kashi Vishwanath mandir to enforce the spitting ban. The problem is most policemen also use tobacco & they too join the party in spitting.

People who haven't worked in elections might not quite understand how they're run. They are...not a tight ship by any stretch, and moving to digital hasn't helped.

Elections are mostly administered by volunteers or people working for small stipends.
They are typically not well-trained; the people charged with maintaining election integrity on the front line might have sat through five hours of training. It used to be fine like that; all you were doing was checking the poll book against the voters who got ballots.
These days, campaign staff are typically more familiar with elections law than an average precinct-level election official. That's why campaigns send their staffers and volunteers out with copies of applicable codes; so they can inform officials of the law's letters.
