Gotta say that buying one was delightfully simple compared to the shitshow that is the Apple store these days. Maybe partly because I was the only customer in the store and there were four free sales people 😂. (It looked pretty sad placed right across from 🍎 in the mall).
Microsoft Cortana is nothing if not straight forward: "And now, the legal stuff [EULA of 50+ pages presented] – in short, you need to press Accept to continue. Or you can decline, but then, you know, NO WINDOWS".
Sheesh. The font rendering alone may make this a short experiment. Crikey it's fugly. But I'm not letting the gut reaction dominate this. The whole point is to be a bit uncomfortable. #WindowsTheStoicChallenge
Also, it’s wild to me that a brand new $1500 Windows laptop running a 10th gen i7 Intel chip scores a pathetic 38 on the Speedometer 2.0 with the stock Edge browser. Compared to 150 with a iPad Pro or at least 120 with a MacBook Pro.
Also, new rule: Committing to say something nice on this journey too. The hardware LOOKS really cool. Got matte black, and its got its own distinct style. Kudos to whoever came up with that.
Another nice thing: The keyboard really is pretty good. First impressions suffered under too high expectations, but on further use, it's clearly nicer than the MBP. I'd still rank it below Apple's free-standing Magic Keyboard, but it's good.
I'm many, many hours into the Windows journey so far, but still haven't been able to get my Rails apps running. At this point I'm starting to get receptive to the idea of just throwing Linux on it directly instead. Anyone running a minimum fuzz distro on Surface Laptop 3?
Still sticking with it. It's death by a thousand cuts, though. Went to install the Docker for WSL preview. Can't. Microsoft's own Surface laptop doesn't ship with Windows 10 Pro, and Docker requires this... *sigh*
On the plus side, I'm really liking the 3:2 aspect ratio! Feels totally right for a laptop. Which leading me to the conclusion that everything I like about this computer is the hardware... everything I don't like is the software.
