At soccer today, my son found himself at the top of the box. Beat one man. Put another defender on his back, spun past him, split two defenders and no-looked a pass to his teammate who slotted it home.

Celebrated tonight over chicken and waffles.

Spent the meal talking about all manner of things.

Was one of those times when your kid just opens up and tells you stuff and you know they’re letting you in because the walls are down and you’re allowed inside.

Those get fewer as the they age.

My son knows I love him more than life itself.

Some day he’ll know how rare all of this is.

In the meantime, I get to know it now.

It’s rare.

My walls were never down with my own dad. He was never there at the game. He never knew the things only friends knew.

It was just an assist in a regular season game that didn’t change the outcome.

It was just a dinner at a normal place on a normal night.

But it was still the best part of my week and best part of my weekend with the kid who is very much the best part of my life.
