Spoilers ahead! I've spent the weekend percolating on my thoughts after seeing @HarrietFilm Friday. While I liked the movie as a whole, there was one character/story line that did not sit well with me. When I thought about it, the signs were there.
In fact, I don't even know why it was in the film to begin with. Why on earth would the writers of this movie think it was okay to have a black antagonist in this? The antagonists should have only been the white people and the institution of slavery.
I loved watching Harriet on screen. She was strong and sure, and an inspiration. By contrast, every time Bigger Long came on the screen I cringed and not because he was the "bad guy."
Add in the plot like where the white slave owner got to "save" Harriet and it was hard for me not to have a sour taste in my mouth.
Harriet was the heroine of the story. She didn't need anyone to save her...least of all a white slave owner intent on killing her and keeping her enslaved.
And so, while I liked the film, I really now regret posting what I did about how much l loved it. I loved Harriet's bravery and strength and I was so glad she had a film made about her, but I don't think it deserves all the awards I was quick to say it should get.
But she deserved better movie than what she got.
The filmmakers did the real Harriet Tubman a disservice and I don't think they have learned from the past. I'm glad I saw it because it was great to see Harriet on the big screen, but also because it opened my eyes to my privilege.
I'm sorry if my privilege and quick judgment hurt anyone's feelings. I'm always trying to do better and in this instance I failed. Fin
