It’s one of the most famous – and perhaps most controversial – love triangles of all time. In Pretty in Pink, Andie chooses Blane, the handsome rich boy, over her best friend Duckie. Did she make the right choice? Let’s take a closer look at each guy…
First up, our main man Blane. He’s peak ‘80s handsomeness. Those baby blue eyes, that shy smile, that semi-mullet? Andie is obviously attracted to him, and we don’t blame her.
The two of them have incredible chemistry. From the outset, it’s all longing looks culminating in a series of very hot kisses.
There’s a certain awkward charm to Andie and Blane’s interactions that remains endearing. Blane himself doesn’t say a whole lot, but his interest in Andie radiates from every tiny gesture. He brings out her sarcastic and flirty side, and she clearly has fun with him.
Of course, he’s very rich, and Andie kind of holds that against him – but there’s no doubt that’s also part of his appeal to her. She has a lot of pride, but she also secretly yearns for the kind of cushy life her better-off classmates have.
Their disastrous first date reinforces the idea that they’re incredibly uncomfortable in each other’s worlds and their class divide immediately places a huge obstacle in their budding relationship. But Blane is sweet and charming and persistent in spite of all this.
That is until it all gets too much for him. He low-key ghosts Andie as a result of pressure from his parents and douchey friend Steff. It clearly breaks his heart, but worse, it breaks hers. Ngl, even if you’re Team Blane, this is a pretty shitty moment.
Blane does realize his mistake and apologizes to Andie. What makes the apology more meaningful is the way he shows how he really listens to her and knows her. It’s enough for Andie to forgive him, and it seems like they're in a good place.
Cutting through all this, however, is Duckie. Oh, Duckie. He has his own charm, what with his vintage fashion and his lip syncing.
Andie and Duckie have been friends since they were kids, and they get each other in a way no one else really can. They have a shared background and interests, and they deeply care about one another.
Duckie is always there for Andie – even sometimes when she doesn’t necessarily want him there – and he’s constantly complimenting her and supporting her.
When Steff is horrible about Andie, Blane walks away, and it’s Duckie who jumps to defend her. Or, at least, to punish Steff.
He just loves Andie SO MUCH, y’all.
But Duckie’s devotion to Andie is also his downfall. He finds it hard to talk to her seriously about his feelings, and also gets angry at her for showing interest in other guys. He doesn’t respect her boundaries, and while they talk a lot, he doesn’t always listen.
Still, at the end of the day, it’s Duckie who does lift Andie up and it’s Duckie who picks up her pieces and helps to put her back together when she’s feeling broken.
Like Blane, Duckie demonstrates growth at the end of the movie. He encourages Andie to go after Blane, wishing her well. He finally shows her true friendship, while Blane gives her the romantic challenge she needs. Maybe it’s really win/win/win in the end? What do you think?
