Sawant's done this before, come from behind in her first race where, as people told me at the time, her winning was literally unthinkable. People outside Washington miss the way mail-in ballots get counted.
We all thought on election day 2013 she'd lost and it was another "almost!" story.
Here's what I wrote in my book about it: 
While working on this book (2014-2015) I was just excited to have a single socialist elected official to point to, in order to back up my argument that the financial crisis had opened a crack in capitalist realism
Sawant won, she fought for $15 alongside the workers who were striking and lobbying and marching in the cold-ass rain and other politicians suddenly had to get on side and they made it the law.

@thenation @etammykim Anyway: Sawant winning isn't only a big fuck-you to Jeff Bezos and all the money he spent trying to buy the City Council. It's also a reminder that the rebirth of socialist electoralism has been long and slow.
