Really excited to be a part of this national conversation taking place tomorrow!

Looking forward to sharing some of the work #LaHEC is doing through @LA_Regents in Louisiana & learning from others.

#PreventionWorks!
Addiction can happen to anyone -- even the brother of the @Surgeon_General of the United States ... or any college student on one of our campuses.

Cc: @ONDCP
People always ask me what I think the biggest killer is and I believe it is stigma. Stigma keeps people in the shadows and that is what kills people. - @Surgeon_General @ONDCP
Treatment IS prevention and prevention IS treatment. - @Surgeon_General @ONDCP

#PreventionWORKS!
There... now you've all be trained on how to administer Naloxone by the @Surgeon_General of the United States! @ONDCP
Awesome, easy-to-read digital postcard on opioid misuse created by the Office of the @Surgeon_General! @ONDCP
Who's NOT at your table? Set a BIG table! More people equals more ideas and solutions. - @Surgeon_General @ONDCP
We have to keep pushing for more #CollegiateRecovery on our campuses, especially those with sober living. - @Surgeon_General @ONDCP

Cc: more applause for @oursoutheastern & the @ulsystem for launching the FIRST #CollegiateRecoveryProgram in Louisiana! #LionUpRecovery 💚💛
Excellent information from @Surgeon_General!

Wait, did I mention he's my table neighbor?!

P.S. - He says hi @rebekahgeemd of @LADeptHealth!

@ONDCP
Within SIX (6) DAYS of equipping the Holly Springs Police Department with Naloxone, they had their first save. - Tanya Smith, Director of Victim Services at @kennesawstate
@ONDCP
A problem has been resources -- the people kind. We've had to cap the number of people for trainings, but we're fixing that soon!

Currently Dr. McNeil is the only person who conducts the Naloxome trainings at @Columbia.

@ONDCP
As the only person who does "a thing" --- I totally understand Dr. McNeil's point about remembering why we do this: to save the lives of students.

The guiding question for my work: Does this help keep Louisiana's college students safe from the negative effects of substance use?
The primary goal is to protect and save lives --- THAT was my personal tipping point. - Tanya Smith of @kennesawstate on sharing how the circumstances around her daughter's overdose death impacted her work. @ONDCP

Thank you for your transparency. 💜
Ready to hear from Dr. Rachel Shelton of @Columbia & Kyle Pendleton of @ZTAFraternity.

And I must say it's always a great conversation when @TimRabolt of @CollegeRecovery is in the room!

@ONDCP
Listening to @TimRabolt's story is always inspiring. He is LIVING PROOF that #CollegiateRecovery WORKS and he's QUICK to let everyone know he's an example of that! 💜

@ONDCP
It's important that every school in this country have SOME form of recovery support services. - @TimRabolt of @CollegeRecovery @ONDCP
Last panel of the day is up! With the high percent of co-occurring disorders reported in college students, this is the perfect closing panel!

So many of our campuses hear from students who are using substances to self-medicate mental health issues.
Annnnnnnnd of course #FERPA, #HIPPA, and "Part 2" (federal laws) comes up when discussing student records. In short:

"Part 2" > FERPA > HIPPA
Is anyone familiar with Section 1.20 of the Higher Education Act? - Dr. Chris McCaghren of the @usedgov.

No hands go up.. then he explains how we get so used to the acronyms over the laws.

In this case? Drug Abuse and Alcohol Prevention Program
#aDAAPPbyAnyOtherName 😂

@ONDCP
And speaking of #DAAPP, I raised the issue of the lack of federal guidance (save for the 2011 @ONDCP Dear Colleague Letter) on #DFSCA (which is something the #NCSC through @hecaod is looking at).

As it can impact federal financial aid, Dr. McCaghren said the point is noted!
Of course this is a great time to remind our Louisiana campuses that we offer FREE technical assistance on #DFSCA/#DAAPP /#BiennialReview issues through #LaHEC!
Our culture is seriously screwed up if our kids are afraid and will not call for help when someone is on the verge of death.

I have more hope in us than that. - Mary Winnefield of @SAFEprojectUS @ONDCP
Now that I've had *some* time to reflect on today's roundtable, I'd like to tip my hat once again to Director Carroll & the staff at @ONDCP.

I know I, and many others that I spoke with, are leaving reenergized, recommitted & refocused to expanding campus Naloxone availability.
Definitely looking forward to continuing this conversation & following up with new colleagues!
