Remember that just since 1970, more Americans have died from gun violence -- murders, suicides and accidents -- than in all the wars in US history, back to the American Revolution. Simple steps like universal background checks aren't perfect, but they can help.
And don't fall for the nonsense that it's only criminal and gang members who die from guns in America. Today's school shooting shows that's a lie. And typically more pre-schoolers die from guns in the U.S. (about 75) than police officers (about 45).
We're not going to ban guns, any more than we ban cars. But we can make guns safer and limit access to them, just as we do with cars. We've reduced auto fatality rates and we can similarly reduce gun fatality rates. But we need to act, not just indulge in thoughts and prayers.
