In August 2013, US District Judge Shira Scheindlin issued her ruling in the case challenging NYC's "stop and frisk" policy. The decision followed a nine-week trial. The policy @MikeBloomberg vigorously defended until today was unconscionable. ccrjustice.org/sites/default/…

I clerked for federal judge Shira Scheindlin in 2011-2012. I read hundreds of pages of evidence about the impact & (in)efficacy of stop-and-frisk. I delved deep into the legal arguments that NYC & the plaintiffs were making.

It was not a close call.

The NYPD was committing constitutional violations against Black and Latino New Yorkers on a gargantuan scale. Millions of stops and frisks. Millions!

Bloomberg told his lawyers to fight fiercely to keep the program. They dragged out the litigation for six years.
Meanwhile, an unprecedented coalition of New Yorkers, @changethenypd, worked to change NYC law to stop the atrocities.

Champion Councilmembers @JumaaneWilliams & @bradlander pushed the coalition's agenda.

Bloomberg used every ounce of his power to try to stop them.

1. On the day a federal judge struck down Mayor Bloomberg's policy of **5 MILLION** unconstitutional stops of black and brown people, the mayor "struck a defiant tone" about the system of apartheid he had created in a major American city. nytimes.com/2013/08/13/nyr…
2. In fact, like the segregationist politician response to Brown v. Board of Education, Mayor Bloomberg suggested he would defy the court ruling. He said: "You’re not going to see any change in tactics...."
3. To justify the apartheid he had created, Bloomberg invoked a classic fearmongering pose: "I wouldn’t want to be responsible for a lot of people dying.”

As it turned out, stop and frisks decreased more than 98% and VIOLENT CRIME WENT DOWN.

Brett Stephens is crediting "Broken Windows" policing strategies like "Stop, Question and Frisk" (SQF) for the nationwide crime drop that began in the 1990s. Let's take a look at the evidence. 1/n
It is true that Broken Windows expanded in the mid 90s in NYC and crime also fell in that period. But crime also fell in cities across the country that did not embrace Broken Windows. 2/n
This is a classic case of confusing correlation with causation. You know what else closely tracks murder rates over time? Ice cream sales. Both tend to happen more often when it's hot outside. That doesn't mean banning ice cream will make cities safer. 3/n
