1. On the day a federal judge struck down Mayor Bloomberg's policy of **5 MILLION** unconstitutional stops of black and brown people, the mayor "struck a defiant tone" about the system of apartheid he had created in a major American city. nytimes.com/2013/08/13/nyr…
2. In fact, like the segregationist politician response to Brown v. Board of Education, Mayor Bloomberg suggested he would defy the court ruling. He said: "You’re not going to see any change in tactics...."
3. To justify the apartheid he had created, Bloomberg invoked a classic fearmongering pose: "I wouldn’t want to be responsible for a lot of people dying.”

As it turned out, stop and frisks decreased more than 98% and VIOLENT CRIME WENT DOWN.
4. As recently as TEN MONTHS AGO, Bloomberg was still defending the policy. Even though by now the fact that VIOLENT CRIME WAS LOWER after stop and frisk ended was clearly demonstrated.
5. Bloomberg is worth more than FIFTY BILLION DOLLARS. A federal judge found that his policing policy VIOLATED THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS of literally millions of New Yorkers. Why doesn't he use some of his largess to make them whole?
6. Some people imagine that these stop and frisks were polite encounters. This video is a little reminder of what they were really like – and how TERRIFYING it must have been to be a black/brown kid in NYC while Bloomberg was mayor. thenation.com/article/stoppe…
7. Bloomberg terrorized an entire generation of children of color. The trauma he inflicted is incalculable. He taught an entire generation of children that they were strangers to the polity. thenation.com/article/stoppe…
8. And lets not forget: Bloomberg's use of stop-and-frisk was not merely an extension of Giuliani. Bloomberg MASSIVELY expanded the policy. This guy wants to be the *Democratic nominee for president, and he's to the right of Giuliani?
9. Indeed. For a man with such a massive fortune, sorry should include some action to make it right. Not merely some phony verbal backtracking now that his dehumanization of an entire generation of children has become inconvenient.
10. Oh and let's not forget Bloomberg's Trump-like personal attacks on the federal judge that struck down the stop-and-frisk policy. Like his fellow entitled billionaire he showed contempt for a judge doing her job.
11. How out of line were Bloomberg's attacks on the federal judge? His lawyer felt the need to go the judge's chambers to personally apologize and disclaim any responsibility for Bloomberg's behavior.
12. Yes, it's hard to see this as a sincere apology – especially since Bloomberg was defending stop-and-frisk as recently as 10 months ago.
13. This is just flat out false. More than 100 witnesses testified in a multi-year civil trial against stop-and-frisk. And this video came out six years ago. Yet as recently as 10 months ago, Bloomberg defended the practice. thenation.com/article/stoppe…
14. I highly recommend this thread from @AdyBarkan who clerked for the federal judge who struck down Bloomberg's stop-and-frisk policy – he has some important insight.
@AdyBarkan 15. Oh and let's not forget this greatest hit. When Mike Bloomberg said that the stop-and-frisk policy – in which BLACK PEOPLE WERE STOPPED MORE THAN 9x AS FREQUENTLY AS WHITE PEOPLE – didn't stop black people enough.
@AdyBarkan 16. Just going to leave this here. This is what Bloomberg had to say about a policy that stopped black and brown people NINE TIMES as often as white people.
