Important: Puerto Rico & the U.S.V.I. have **not received money to rebuild areas devastated by Hurricane Maria 2YRS AGO.**
@HUDgov refuses to release aid, defying Congress, & a legal directive signed by the President before his administration withheld aid. Listen:
The lawmakers speaking in this video I edited together are: @RepDavidEPrice @DarrenSoto @JoaquinCastrotx @AlbioSiresNJ & @KatherineClark

Respectfully, listening to them sound the alarm is getting old. What will/can they do to force the administration to follow the law?
I asked: can they take the case to court? I was told this is more likely: withholding money from other projects, that the administration wants funded, in order to force the Trump administrations hand to deliver, already appropriated money, to Puerto Rico and the U.S.V.I.
That's the likely reality, as of now I was told.
Here's another reality: that's ridiculous.
If any state in this union waited almost 2 years to get relief aid because of a natural disaster politicians & the electorate would be raising hell & high water, as we say in Louisiana.
Here's another reality: people in Puerto Rico and the U.S.V.I can't vote for president. Their representative in congress has NO VOTING POWER.
I know there are other headlines to chase: Important ones, too. But it unconscionable that survivors are still waiting on aid to rebuild.
To those who will raise a valid point, such as: how do you make sure billions in tax payer money (and Puerto Ricans pay taxes) isn't wasted in Puerto Rico, where politicians from both of the major parties have a legacy of being corrupt? The answer: federal oversight.
Puerto Rico is currently dealing with a federal oversight board that was imposed on them by congress to get them out of bankruptcy which was declared because of years of corruption by politicians.
They're accustomed to forced oversight. Many or most don't like the board; some do
It's a lazy excuse to say don't send aid because it may fall into corrupt hands. FEMA has a behemoth of a staff in Puerto Rico who are working daily to help people. The FBI is there. There's a U.S. Attorney. Corruption occurs after every disaster.
It shouldn't be allowed. Accountability is essential, and the federal govt has the money to do it. Also, the eyes of the world are on Puerto Rico, arguably, like never before. People are watching what's happening, & rooting for them.
Folks are also learning about the island, and its people:
•who are United States citizens •who've served in the U.S. military for decades
•died in wars
•are asking to be treated humanely & equally when it comes to giving aid to U.S. citizens devastated by a monster storm.
