It really is amazing that the totality of Kovalchuk's career is a few successes against vastly undermanned opposition (KHL, Olympics, Worlds) and a long, excruciating streak of failures against tough opponents in tough situations.

As an addendum to this thread, the most fascinating part of Russia's hockey terminology is the story of our word for a penalty shot. It's "bullitt." And nobody knows where it came from.
First of all, Russians don't have special terms for penalty shots in other sports...
In soccer, we often say "the eleven-meter shot", but most often just the word "penalty" is used, with the accent on the middle syllable which makes it sound Italian (and therefore awesome). In basketball, it's "penalty throws." So, why this strange term "bullitt" in hockey?..
There are three possible explanations, one better then the next. The most common one is that it's simply the mispronounced word "bullet", since it implies speed, directness and deadliness. But it makes no sense because the penalty shot is never compared to a bullet in English...

A great question posed by my multilingual colleague. Why do Russians use English hockey terms such as "save"?
The answer is, Russian appears to be uniquely badly suited for hockey in particular. I want me to extrapolate...
Problem is, hockey is extremely rich in very technical terminology, all of it invented by the worst kind of English speakers, North Americans. "Worst" because English is already a very dense language, information-wise, and Americans tend to make it even denser...
Russian, of course, isn't dense at all. At least not when it comes to information. It's very dense with emotion, but when it comes to technical terminology, we tend to be at a loss. Our tendency to beautify and overarticulate everything takes over. The results are not pretty...

@sportexpress This is Russia in a nutshell. If you want to say something decent and progressive, like "hey, let's funnel taxpayer money into something that isn't stupid propaganda!", you need to preface it with a thick layer of stupid propaganda.

asking kacchan to leave was the kindest thing he could have done, but he wishes it didn't have to *hurt* so much.

he thought he wasn't a stranger to loneliness. it was more unbearable than he remembered.
part of him knows what he should keep moving. that even if kacchan has decided to return home, news of it wouldn't be fast enough to stop the ones already ordered to pursue them.
the purification already exhausted him tremendously. he's not sure if it's because he's out of practice, or because purification harms him as much as it would a normal demon, but it was hard to even keep his eyes open. and that's not just because he cried himself sore.
