I'm not ready to write off 2°C threshold yet. NO ONE knows how hard/expensive it will be to decrease emissions. However, experience with previous environmental issues (acid rain, ozone depletion) tells us that it will be cheaper & easier than even the most optimistic estimate.
The reason is that private actors are very very smart, so once there are policies in place to decrease emissions, the resulting innovation will generate new ways to solve the problem at modest cost.
This stands in contrast to the pessimism of the "free market" adherents (from @paulkrugman's fantastic NYT Magazine article: nytimes.com/2010/04/11/mag…)
