I'm not ready to write off 2°C threshold yet. NO ONE knows how hard/expensive it will be to decrease emissions. However, experience with previous environmental issues (acid rain, ozone depletion) tells us that it will be cheaper & easier than even the most optimistic estimate.
The reason is that private actors are very very smart, so once there are policies in place to decrease emissions, the resulting innovation will generate new ways to solve the problem at modest cost.
This stands in contrast to the pessimism of the "free market" adherents (from @paulkrugman's fantastic NYT Magazine article: nytimes.com/2010/04/11/mag…)

Reporters: here's an idea for a terrific story: how to climate-proof your retirement.

idea: lots of people own 401K-type investments, but have no idea what their exposure to climate risk is.
your retirement might be invested in oil infrastructure (e.g., production, transport, refinery) or in things that are going to get hammered by climate change (e.g., real estate, agriculture).
the big risk is in "stranded assets": things that lose value suddenly. this was the big problem in the housing crisis 15 years ago. over a period of just a few months, houses that people thought were worth $500K dropped in value to $300K.

I hesitate to give advice b/c my experience is anecdotal, but I've had a lot so here goes.

THREAD
Read papers of the people you'll meet with. Nothing makes you look smarter than if you can talk about their research. Also, it helps you avoid saying, "I don't think [X] is a very important subject" when the person you're talking to works on [X]. Yes, that's happened.
Ask the search committee what your job talk should be about. There is no single answer for what to talk about in a job talk. Some people talk about their latest research, some give an overview of their publication history, some emphasize what they WILL work on if hired.

I've come to the conclusion that the biggest problem facing science is that it doesn't scale well. If there are a dozen people working in your field, you can read all of their papers and know what all of them are doing.
If there are 250 people in your field, then you cannot read all of the papers and even know what's being worked on.

This means that a lot of cool results are simply missed by the field, and a lot of work is duplicated, both of which is making science inefficient.
Combine this with the incentive that seems to exist in a lot of institutions to publish as many papers as possible, without regard to their usefulness ➡️ we're drowning in publications.

This is going to get a lot worse as countries like China ramp up their scientific output.

English only people are likely missing what is happening at the #Colombia-#Venezuela border. It was closed on Feb 23 to avoid US aggression and false flags. Since then food prices dropped making Venezuelans very happy. But Cúcuta (Colombia) lives from smuggling and is now dying
This is quite impressive, because in only 8 days Venezuela has slowed down the inflation. As @rmenendezp and @pasquicurcio have always said, extraction of currency and subsidised products to Colombia is one of the keys of the economic war from the US.
This can sound like a paradox, because we’re being told by western media that #Venezuela is in crisis and we never hear that Cúcuta is in one of the poorest regions of Colombia. It only survives thanks to the black market from smuggling almost free gasoline from Venezuela
